Commentary:

* After one week at the top of the chart, Scott Pilgrim's Finest Hour surrenders it's position to Diary of a Wimpy Kid 5, which got a publicity boost this week when the title of the November release was announced. Wimpy Kid 5 currently sits at #8 on the overall bestseller chart, while Scott Pilgrim has slid to #24.

* The highest debut this week belongs to The Adventures of Ook and Gluk, Kung-Fu Cavemen from the Future, the upcoming graphic novel by the creators of Captain Underpants. Also debuting this week is the latest Negima! volume, and the new colorized scholastic edition of Bone: Tall Tales also finally creeps up onto the list.

Monkey Covers

Sunday is Monkey Covers day here at YACB. Because there's nothing better than a comic with a monkey on the cover!

Jerry orders an unusual pizza for his friend King Klonk on the over of The Adventures of Jerry Lewis #86 (1961).

(Standard disclaimer about giant tower-climbing purple gorillas not really being monkeys applies.)

Commentary:

* It's a good week to be Brian Lee O'Malley. Scott Pilgrim's Finest Hour, which presently sits at #9 on the Amazon overall chart, reached at least as high as #6 earlier in the week. I don't ever recall there being a comic book that had successful midnight release parties. Sales on par with pre-Watchmen movie levels; hype/excitement like a Harry Potter or Twilight novel. O'Malley's only other previous major work, Lost at Sea, even pops up onto the list.

* If you're wondering where Scott Pilgrim vols 4 & 5 are? It appears that a few weeks back Amazon decided to no longer classify them as Comics & Graphic Novels...! Just another indication about the size of the grain of salt with which you should be taking these charts.

* People still care about comic price guides? Apparently so, as the pre-order for the 40th Overstreet Guide is the highest debut of the week. Also debuting are pre-orders for two Marvel hardcovers: Siege and Iron Man; and the latest Penny Arcade and Warriors volumes.

* The Blackest Night hardcovers start to show a bit of softness in the face of the Scott Pilgrim onslaught, but they still occupy seven of the top thirty slots on the chart.

What's Happening with DC's Kids Comics?

Those of us reading the DC October solicitations may have noticed (like Johanna did) that Batman: The Brave and the Bold and Billy Batson and the Magic of Shazam! are having their final issues. This follows on with Super Friends ending (the last issue came out this month, though I don't think it was ever formally announced); and Tiny Titans is not on the schedule for October either. Also, this month DC raised the price on their kids line to $2.99.

The cancellation of  Batman TBaTB, is somewhat surprising, as the show it is based on is still running on Cartoon Network and there is a video game due out in September. Billy Batson was originally meant to be a showcase for Mike Kunkel—based on the critically acclaimed Shazam! comic by Jeff Smith—but when it became obvious that Kunkel would not be able to stick to a monthly schedule (which really should have been obvious from the get go to everyone) it was turned over to Tiny Titans  writers Art Baltazar and Franco. They gave it their best, but the comic as established didn't really mess with their sensibilities, and a constantly changing art team didn't help matters (although Mike Norton seems to have finally settled in nicely). Super Friends, which replaced the excellent Justice League Unlimited title on the schedule, had a reputation of being 'too kiddy.'

(Outside of the super-hero books, Scooby-Doo is getting relaunched in September with a new subtitle and #1 issue; Cartoon Network Action Pack and Looney Tunes are still intact, at least for now...)

So its fairly obvious that the DC Kids books (formally Johnny DC) are the next target in the new DCE management overhaul. It's not terribly surprising. Despite being of fairly high quality (Especially Batman TBaTB, which I recently highlighted as one of DC's best titles) they haven't managed to capture much readership. It's been speculated that these titles survive on low sales in the direct market due to their being available on newsstands and via subscription, and that collected editions may sell in bookstores.  But I suspect that the new management looked at the overall sales figures for these titles and decided that they could and should do better.

I find it highly unlikely that DCE will stop their line of kids super-hero comics all together. Rather, I think that DCE is rethinking the entire line-up, with an aim towards increasing sales; their overall strategy is to emphasize their corporate-owned super-hero characters, and getting comics featuring those characters into the hand of kids only makes sense. A mini-series crossover with L'il Archie has already been announced for Tiny Titans. The DC Kids panel is scheduled for Sunday morning at SDCC where I suspect we'll see some announcements made. (I highly doubt they'd invite Mike Norton to be on the panel if they were simply canceling his title without there being something to replace it.)

* Interest in Harvey Pekar is sparked by his passing, with three American Splendor collections pushing up on to the chart.

* The only non-Pekar debut this week is the latest Pokémon: Diamond and Pearl Adventure down near the bottom. It's also the only manga to chart this week.

New This Week: July 14, 2010

Here's a look at what will be hitting the shelves of your friendly neighborhood comic store tomorrow:

The sixth and final volume in the Scott Pilgrim series, Scott Pilgrim's Finest Hour, is due to arrive. Maybe you've heard about it? Just in time for the movie, which hits theaters next month. It's a rare example of perfect timing in the comics-to-movies publishing schedule, as interest in the graphic novels in the series has been high ever since the first trailer debuted a few months ago, and the pre-order for the final volume was at the top of the Amazon comics & graphic novels chart last week.

Edit: Oops. While SPFH shipped to retailers this week, it doesn't go on sale until Tuesday (the same day as bookstores). So put it on your list for next week.
Also hitting stores this week is Fractured Fables, a kid-friendly anthology with stories by some top talents, including Jill Thompson, Bryan Talbot, Terry Moore, Mike Allred, Larry Marder, Ted McKeever, and many others.

Do you like vikings? DC have Viking Prince by Joe Kubert, a hardcover collection of the classic back-up series.

And Marvel bring us Agents of Atlas Vs., a hardcover collection of the Atlas vs. X-Men and Atlas vs. Avengers mini-series that bridged the gap between the former and current Atlas series. If you missed out before (and given the sales figures, chances are you did) you now have a second chance to read these fine stories.

Sunday is Monkey Covers day here at YACB. Because there's nothing better than a comic with a monkey on the cover!

I cannot tell if Nick is fighting with or against the giant ape on the cover of Nick #5 (1987).

* As strong as Blackest Night may be, it cannot topple Scott Pilgrim from the top of the chart. With just a bit over a week before the final volume debuts in bookstores, it also hits #89 on the overall Amazon books chart.

* Two volumes of Absolute Planetary debut in the bottom half of the chart.

* The only manga is the newest Ouran High School Host Club, debuting down at #46.

The Many Costumes of Wonder Woman

The original, from Sensation Comics #1 (1942)

A quick change from skirt to shorts in Sensation Comics #5 (1942)

She goes mod in Wonder Woman #178 (1968)

She has a different outfit nearly every issue, such as this stylish ensemble from Wonder Woman #181 (1969)

Going to all-white in Wonder Woman #186 (1970)

The white outfit saw many variations, such as this stylish fighting ensemble in Wonder Woman #201 (1972)

But then in Wonder Woman #204 (1973) she was back to the classic outfit with shorts (although by this point the shorts are noticeably shorter....)

In Wonder Woman #288 (1982), the classic bird emblem is replaced with a stylized WW.

When George Perez rebooted Wonder Woman with a new #1 (1987) in the wake of Crisis, he kept her standard costume, though adding a good deal more hair.

Though he also gave her a variety of specialized costumes, such as this warrior ensemble in Wonder Woman vol. 2 #10 (1987).

In Wonder Woman vol. 2 #93 (1995), the character Artimis became the 'official' Wonder Woman and inherited the now-classic WW costume, while Diana continued her super-hero career in a black outfit, complete with, yes, a jacket!

John Byrne took over the title with Wonder Woman vol. 2 #101 (1995) and returned Diana to the WW costume, with a few variations.

The shorts would continue to get shorter over the years. By the time Wonder Woman vol. 2 #139 (1998) rolled around, she was for all purposes now fighting crime in a bathing suit.

Although the length and volume of her hair varied over the years, Wonder Woman was always known for her long locks. But in Wonder Woman vol. 2 #190 (2003), she shockingly cut her hair super-short! (A change that would only last about 6 months—apparently Amazon hair grows much faster than normal human hair...)

With another relaunch in Wonder Woman vol. 3 #1 (2006), her costume returns to a version of the classic bird emblem, and her belt has morphed into the WW emblem.

In Wonder Woman vol. 3 #6 (2007) Diana briefly returned to her all-white super-spy outfit.

And now in 2010, Jim Lee has once again given Wonder Woman a new costume, with black pants and jacket. How long will this change last...?
