Commentary:

• Three Kindle editions top the list this week:The first collection of Injustice, which was on sale earlier in the week; The Best of Archie, which is on sale now; and Snoopy: Cowabunga!, which is one of the choices for a free book when signing up for the Kindle Kids newsletter and is apparently being counted as sales by Amazon.
• Also debuting this week are the latest issue of Injustice Year Two (on Kindle), the sale-priced first volume of Sin City (also on Kindle), and the first volume of the Attack on Titan spin-off No Regrets.
• Persepolis has been slowly climbing up the charts over the past few weeks, which is unusual given that it isn't August/September or January. TCU has chosen it as their summer 'Common Read' this year, so maybe a bunch of college students from one university are enough to push it into the top ten?

Commentary:

• This week's new #1 is Snoopy: Cowabunga!, a collection of Peanuts strips on the Kindle. Last week when it debuted at #3 I speculated that maybe there had been a sale earlier in he week, but here it is one week later and the regular-priced collection tops the charts. Why this particular collection right now? Who knows...
• The top debut this week is the pre-order for Michael Inman's next Oatmeal book: The Terrible and Wonderful Reasons Why I Run Long Distances. It's not due out until the end of September, but the fact that it debuts high the week it is available for pre-order shouldn't come as a surprise.
• Also debuting this week are Guardians of the Galaxy/All-New X-Men: The Trial of Jean Grey, combining two high-profile Marvel properties with movies this summer; and the first collection of Rick Remender & Matteo Scalera's Black Science.

Commentary:

• In the run-up to Father's Day, Jeffrey Brown's two Star Wars books about that lovable father Darth Vader move into the top two slots. Darth Vader and Son is currently #38 on the overall books chart, and Vader's Little Princess is #76. 
• In fact, Jeffrey Brown takes up five spots in the top 50 with this Star Wars Books this week, including the pre-orders for Goodnight Darth Vader and the second Jedi Academy book.
• The top debut this week is the Kindle edition of Snoopy: Cowabunga!, a Peanuts collection. I'm guessing maybe there was a sale earlier in the week?
• The only other debut this week is the next issue of Injustice Year Two.

Commentary:

• Mignola & Fegredo's Hellboy: The Midnight Circus was yesterday's Kindle Deal of the Day, and it dutifully hopped up to the top of the comics chart as readers jumped on the chance to but a bargain-priced Hellboy OGN.
• The top (non-deal-of-the-day) debut this week is the first hardcover Miracleman collection. While there were some who said that people wouldn't buy a pricy hardcover of an obscure character from the 80s, they didn't count on the pull of Alan Moore to Amazon buyers, nor the big 50% discount that Amazon is offering.
• Otherwise it is pretty much business as usual on the chart this week: Jeffrey Brown's Star Wars, Attack on Titan, The Walking Dead, Saga, Batman, Calvin & Hobbes, etc.

Commentary:

• Once again, Roz Chast's Can't We Talk about Something More Pleasant? tops the chart, currently placing at #101 on the overall Amazon books chart.
• Not far behind are Jeffrey Brown's two perfect-for-Father's Day Star Wars titles: Darth Vader and Son & Vader's Little Princess, at #139 & #188 on the overall Amazon books chart. Two other Jeffrey Brown Star Wars books make the chart as well, the two Jedi Academy books, the second volume making its pre-publication debut. There's another Jeffrey Brown Star Wars book, Goodnight Darth Vader due out in late July... (Marvel take note: this is the kind of Star Wars-related comics that are selling to the general public!)
• With Marvel books getting a reprieve in the Hachette-Amazon kerfuffle, and the release of the movie last weekend, X-Men: Days of Future Past hops on up to the #4 slot. The Kindle edition also returns to the chart.
• The top debut this week, in the #5 slot, is The Forgotten Man Graphic Edition, a graphic novel version of Amity Shales' history of the Great Depression adapted by Chuck Dixon & Paul Rivoche.
• Also debuting this week are the first volume of Deadpool by Daniel Way in print and All-New X-Men, Vol. 1 sale-priced on the Kindle.
• What to make of the sudden surge of interest in Calvin & Hobbes this week? Perhaps its the debut of the Dear Mr. Waterson documentary on Netflix?

• Once again, Roz Chast's Can't We Talk about Something More Pleasant? tops the chart, currently placing at #73 on the overall Amazon books chart.
• Father's Day must be approaching: both of Jeffrey Brown's Darth Vader-as-a-parent books climb into the top ten this week.
• Box Brown's Andre the Giant graphic biography continues its climb up the chart, hitting #3 this week.
• The top debut this week is the pre-order for The Power of Tank Girl, a collection of recent Tank Girl stories. A bit surprising, as I wouldn't have thought that Tank Girl had a big enough following for a book that doesn't come out until September to debut as high as it does.

Commentary:

• A new Batman volume is released and rushes up the charts, but it's not strong enough to knock Roz Chast's memoir out of the top slot. Can't We Talk about Something More Pleasant? is currently #40 on the overall Amazon books chart, while Batman vol. 4 is #199.
• Debuting on Kindle this week are a new Injustice issue and the movie prequel Godzilla: Awakening.
• Print items debuting this week are Ben Hatke's The Return of Zita the Spacegirl; Kelly Sue Deconnick & Emma Rios's Pretty Deadly; and the recently-announced-as-a-television-series John Constantine, Hellblazer, Vol. 1: Original Sins.
• Amazon is having one of their periodic spats with a publisher, this time Hachette, and Marvel are caught in the crossfire and Hachette is their exclusive distributor to the bookstore market. This has resulted in Amazon not filling their stock quickly on Marvel books and nearly everything being listed as 'available in 1 to 3 weeks.' Not a good place to be with a new X-Men movie out next week. Despite this, X-Men: Days of Future Past manages to creep up onto the chart near the bottom.
• DC meanwhile place eleven titles on the chart this week, but eight of those are Batman and the remaining three are old Vertigo properties.

Commentary:

• Roz Chast's Can't We Talk About Something More Pleasant?: A Memoir remains in the top spot for a second week in a row, and has climbed to #5 on the overall Amazon books chart; the Kindle edition climbs to join it at #2 on the comics chart. It looks like we have a hit on our hands here.
• Debuting strong at #4 is Godzilla: Awakening, a tie-in to the upcoming Godzilla movie.
• Also debuting this week are the third Monster Musume volume; the pre-order for Bryan Lee O'Malley's new OGN, Seconds; and the graphic biography of wrestler Andre the Giant.
• There was a massive Star Wars comic Kindle sale at May 4th; earlier in the week the residuals of that sale were dominating the chart, but by Friday now only a couple of Dawn of the Jedi volumes remain.

It was features in articles in The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and Publishers Weekly, which is likely how it managed to debut in the top slot. It's currently #70 on the overall Amazon books chart. The Kindle edition also charts.
• Also debuting high this week is the kindle edition of the first volume of Bleach, which was the Kindle Deal of the Day earlier in the week and available then at a bargain price.

• In its second week on the chart, Nathan W. Pyle's NYC Basic Tips and Etiquette moves into the top slot. Once again, a Webcomic collection sells big.
• The top debut this week is a new volume of the popular Attack on Titan. Six AoT volumes make the chart this week. Also debuting is the Batman: Death of the Family Book and Joker Mask Set (a pre-order—it's not due out until September).
• The first volume of Sex Criminals continues to sell pretty well in pre-order; could Image have another mainstream hit on their hands? (The review/profile on Wired last week likely helps.)

• The two Walking Dead Compendia return to the top two slots this week. WD has three of the top five, though just ten of the top fifty.
• The top debut this week is NYC Basic Tips and Etiquette, a graphic how-to guide for surviving in New York City. Also debuting high this week in print are A Bintel Brief: Love and Longing in Old New York; and the first collection of Sex Criminals. 
• The Kindle edition of Joss Whedon and Karl Moline's Fray: Future Slayer shows up in the #10 slot; usually when an older title debuts this high it signifies some sort of sale, but I haven't noticed anything of the sort this past week... Commentary:

• The third Saga volume returns to the top of the chart, and is #101 on the overall Amazon books chart.
• Last week's Walking Dead surge abates a bit, though it's still strong with three of the top five and fourteen of the top fifty. The new issue on Kindle debuts at a strong #4.  
• The only other debuts this week are two Captain America: The Winter Soldier collections, one the ultimate paperback collection, the other the Kindle edition. Often interest in the comics is stronger before the movie comes out than after, but Captain America: The Winter Soldier is an exception.
• So… The big news yesterday was that Amazon is purchasing comiXology. Could make things interesting. I've always favored comiXology for digital comics over Kindle because the Kindle editions are usually of noticeable lesser quality. It also consolidates the two biggest digital comics publishers into one company, which is troubling. We'll have to see how things shake out in practice.

Commentary:

• Axe Cop Volume 1 was one of the Kindle Daily Deals this past week, and the residual hangover is enough to push it to the #1 slot on the comics chart this week.
• The season finale of The Walking Dead aired on television last Sunday, and as we've come to expect that means a surge in demand for The Walking Dead comics. Twenty-three of the Top Fifty this week is a WD edition—nearly half of the chart!
• Debuting in print on the chart this week are The Harlem Hellfighters by Max Brooks and Caanan White; Neurocomic by Hana Roš & Matteo Farinella; and the latest volume of Naruto.
• Marvel is having another sale on Kindle collected editions, which is why Marvel 1602 and New Avengers vol. 1 show up on the chart. Captain America: the Winter Soldier, despite also being a part of the sale and having the same title as the big budget blockbuster movie opening today, doesn't reach the top fifty (it would be at #52 if the chart went that far...)

Commentary:

• We have a new #1! The third volume of Brian K. Vaughan & Fiona Staples' Saga came out this week and made the jump over The Walking Dead. Considering this is while The Walking Dead is showing on television, and Saga is purely a comics property with no tie-in to other media, that is quite the accomplishment. It is currently #43 on the overall Amazon books chart.
• Most new items this week are Kindle editions (Injustice, The Walking Dead, Saga, How About Never...) The only non-Kindle debut is Godzilla: Awakening, a graphic novel prequel to the upcoming Godzilla movie.
• In fact, it's a pretty boring week overall on the Amazon chart, with the usually suspects doing the usual things.
• So I'll point out what's not happening, and that's any appearance by Captain America, who has a new major motion picture coming out next week.

Commentary:

• The latest Walking Dead collection remains popular, on top of the comics chart and #54 on the overall Amazon books chart.
• The top debut this week is the pre-order for The Terrible and Wonderful Reasons Why I Run Long Distances, the latest from The Oatmeal's Matthew Inman, which isn't scheduled to come out until September.
• Also debuting relatively high this week is How About Never—Is Never Good for You?: My Life in Cartoons, a cartoon memoir by the New Yorker's cartoon editor, Bob Mankoff.
• A Marvel Kindle edition sale puts Spider-Man: Spider-Island & Thor: Season One on the chart this week. Oddly (and perhaps a bit worryingly for Marvel) none of the Captain America titles involved in the sale make the chart.
• Rounding out this week's debuts are the Justice League: Trinity War hardcover, and the latest installment in Moore & O'Neill's League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Nemo: The Roses of Berlin.

Commentary:

• Wednesday's $2.99 sale on Kindle editions of select DC New 52 collections pushes those up into the top fifteen, displacing nearly everything else on the list. Adjust your mental rankings accordingly.
• But that wasn't enough to stop the newest Walking Dead collection, which remains at #1 on the comics chart and is currently #29 on the overall Amazon books chart.
• Given the displacement caused by the New 52 Kindle sale books, the upward movement shown by the few items that do move up on the chart (mostly Batman collections) is even more impressive.
• Non sale items that debut this week include a new Pearls Before Swine collection and
  Marion Fayolle's In Pieces from Nobrow.

Commentary:

• A new #1 this week! The twentieth Walking Dead paperback hit comic stores and Kindle (debuting on the chart this week at #16) this week, and the print edition ships from Amazon next week. Thirteen Walking Dead comics and collections make the top fifty chart this week, including the top three slots.
• Image comics kind of rule the chart this week; between Walking Dead and Saga they take six of the top ten and eight of the top fifteen.
• The top debut this week is the newest Avatar: The Last Airbender OGN, impressively at #7. It ships next week as well.
• Manga-wise Attack on Titan continues to dominate the top fifty, although a new-to-the-chart title, Nisekoi: False Love, manages to crack in near the bottom.
• Also debuting this week are the third A Game of Thrones volume (in pre-order); and single Kindle issues of DC's Forever Evil #6 & American Vampire #1, the latter being the beneficiary of a 99¢ American Vampire sale.
• Alessandro Sanna's The River, which debuted last week and earlier this week was cracking the top ten, has dropped completely off the chart this morning. At first I suspected a re-categorization and it turns out that Amazon has sold out of their stock and is now listing it as 'Usually ships within 2 to 4 weeks.' So it is still popular, just presently not selling due to lack of copies.

Commentary:

• Back on top this week: The Walking Dead Compendia. It looks like they're going to play a little dance with Hyperbole and a Half for the top spot for the foreseeable future.
• The top debuts are two Kindle single issues, usual suspects Injustice and Walking Dead. The top print debut this week is the collected edition of Marvel's Infinity. Unusual for Marvel, but the combination of a connection to Guardians of the Galaxy and a hefty Amazon discount seems to have turned out a few buyers.
• Also debuting this week is Alessandro Sanna's The River. It's being marketed as a children's picture book, but looking at some preview pages it looks to me that, if it's not comics, it is awfully comics-adjacent. 
• Dead Watch: There are sixteen Walking Dead-related titles on the top fifty chart this week. All hail the power of basic cable!

Commentary:

• Amazon raises its price back up on the two Walking Dead Compendia, and that's enough for Hyperbole and a Half to slip back up into the #1 slot this morning.
• But still a very strong showing for The Walking Dead this week, taking four of the top five slots, eight of the top twenty, and fourteen in the top fifty.
• Marvel releases the trailer for this summer's Guardians of the Galaxy movie this week, and three GoG collections pop into the top ten (with the related Annihilation also making a debut appearance further down in the chart). Maybe Marvel could boost their collection sales for other properties by just making movie trailers for them?
• The only other debut this week is the pre-order for next week's issue of Injustice Year Two.
