Commentary:

• The pre-order for Michael Inman's Why Grizzly Bears Should Wear Underpants returns to the top of the chart this week, followed closely by Allie Brosh's Hyperbole and a Half in the #2 slot, making for a one-two punch of Webcomic collections at the top of the chart this week.
• Dead Watch: The new Walking Dead hardcover lands in the #3 position. There are six WD collections on the chart this week, surely a sign that the new season of the television show is set to debut in a few short weeks.
• Injustice Watch: It turns out that issue #36 is the last (for now) issue of Injustice: Gods Among Us. Which likely explains why it debuted at the top of the chart this week and remains in the top ten this week. However there are no other Injustice issues in the top fifty chart this week.
• Titan Watch: The top debut this week is Attack on Titan 7 and there are three other of Hajime Isayama's Attack of Titan volumes on the chart this week (two for the first time). Apparently there is a fairly popular anime series. Publisher Kodansha appears poised to take advantage as there are three more AoT volumes scheduled for release before the end of the year.
• Also debuting this week are the latest New 52 Justice League collection; a new Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin collection; a hardcover edition of Hyperbole and a Half; the Kindle edition of the first Locke & Key collection; and a Mask and Book Set for the first New 52 Batman collection.
• Julie Maroh's Blue Is the Warmest Color sneaks back up onto the chart this week. While it's not unusual for a film based on a comic to increase that comic's sales, it is pretty rare when it's a foreign language film based on a European comic.

Commentary:

• The top debut this week is the latest issue of Injustice: Gods Among Us on the Kindle. The new Injustice issue nearly always debuts near the top of the chart, but doesn't often claim the #1 spot (this week being the obvious exception).
• Star Wars Watch: The three Jeffrey Brown Star Wars books (from Scholastic & Chronicle Books) are all in the top ten this week. Meanwhile the first collection of the Brian Wood Star Wars comic series (from Dark Horse) debuts on the chart, but down in the #49 position.
• Also debuting this week is SCADA and Me: A Book for Children and Management by Robert M. Lee & Jeff Haas. Never heard of it? It's a book for on a particular cybersecurity concern for IT managers and workers, told in comics in a kids' picture book format.
• Also debuting this week are The Hedge Knight: The Graphic Novel, based on a George R. R. Martin property; the first collection of the current Guardians of the Galaxy comic; a big fat Uncanny X-Men Omnibus, and the first collection of Hickman & Dragotta's East of West.
• Kindle Watch: Only four of the chart positions this week are taken up by Kindle editions, down one from last week. Three of those four are Injustice issues. Several Marvel collections are on sale on the Kindle right now for under $4 (including Iron Man: The Five Nightmares, World War Hulk, & Spider-Man: Died in Your Arms Tonight) but even at the reduced price there currently isn't enough interest there for those to chart this evening...
• This week's snapshot is taken in the early evening, rather than the usual morning. So take chart positions and movements this week with a slightly larger grain of salt than usual.

Commentary:

• Debuting at the top of the chart this week is the pre-order for Why Grizzly Bears Should Wear Underpants, the latest collection of strips from Matthew Inman's online comic The Oatmeal. It is currently #46 on the cover Amazon books bets sellers chart. (Heidi MacDonald covered this more in depth yesterday on The Beat...) 
• Diary Watch: The saga of the missing Dork Diaries & Diary of a Wimpy Kid books continues. Well, it's not much of a saga; Amazon just decided last week to re-categorize them as not comics. Looks like this is the new reality.
• Dead Watch: With the absence of the Diary books, the gradual decline of University Effect books now that the start-of-the-school-year book buying is waning, and the debut of the new season just a month away, we start to see a resurgence in The Walking Dead. Eight items make the chart this week, including pre-orders for two upcoming collections in the top ten, and the Kindle digital edition of the new issue (#114), which is the first time that a run-of-the-mill regular-priced comic issue of The Walking Dead has charted.
• The first volume of Hajame Isayama's Attack on Titan makes its first appearance on the chart. The series is currently on volume 6, so that fact that it is the first volume charting would indicate that interest in this manga property is growing. (Earlier in the year volume 5 made a brief appearance on the chart.)
• Also debuting this week are the latest issues of Injustice, and the pre-order for the hardcover collection of Marvel's Age of Ultron crossover event.
• Long-time indie comics darling Jeffrey Brown has all three of his Star Wars-related books in the top twelve. Publishers take note: Allowing talented creators to go off-model and all-ages with your established properties can be highly successful...!
• Kindle Watch: Only five of the chart positions this week are taken up by Kindle editions, down two from last week.

Commentary:

• Diary Watch: The astute among you who have been following these Amazon comics and graphic novels sales charts may realize in looking through the list this week that there are no Wimpy Kid or Dork Diaries titles. This is because Amazon appears to have removed them completely from their Comics and Graphic Novels category. All of them. They're gone. Why? It may be that someone (or many someones) petitioned Amazon to have them re-categorized. Or perhaps someone at Amazon did it completely on their own. Perhaps there were meetings, or maybe it was the arbitrary action of a lone Amazon employee. Mysterious are the ways of Amazon categorization. But the end result is the same: if they're not on the Amazon bestseller chart, then they aren't in my weekly chart shapshot. This of course will make comparisons from last week to this week difficult, and will really mess with my year-end compilation.
• The elimination of the WK & DD titles opens up a lot of room for new and returning titles to the top 50 chart this week. Leading the pack at the #1 position is the Kindle edition of Fables vol. 1: Legends in Exile, which is still enjoying the afterglow of being a Kindle Daily Deal earlier in the week at a reduced price ($1.99). Right behind it is the latest digital issue of Injustice: Gods Among Us.
• Debuting in the #4 slot is Claire Belton's I Am Pusheen the Cat, based on her Webcomic-like-thing. That makes three of the top four items on the chart debut items this week.
• A bit further down the chart, the television tie-in OGN Once Upon a Time: Shadow of the Queen marks Marvel's only appearance on this week's chart. Mission in a Bottle, the story of the founding of Honest Tea company in comics form, debuts at the midway point.
• Two Kindle editions of print comics show up next to each other: issue #0 of William Shatner's Tekwar, and the first issue of DC's Forever Evil event mini-series. The Tekwar comic might be benefiting from the fact that the first Tekwar novel was one of yesterday's Kindle Daily Deals. Forever Evil's appearance I believe is the first time that a regularly-priced new comic issue was landed on the chart.
• Rounding out the debuts this week are Sailor Moon Short Stories, Blue Is the Warmest Color, the third New 52 Batman compilation, the latest Chew compilation, and Jeff Smith's RASL.
• The University effect is still in high gear as college students continue to return to classes for the fall semester and buy their required texts on Amazon. Persepolis, Maus, Fun Home and Understanding Comics lead the way.
• Kindle Watch: Only seven of the chart positions this week are taken up by Kindle editions, down one from last week. The loss of WK & DD Kindle editions was mostly made up for by the rising of other Kindle comics up onto the chart.

Commentary:

• For the fourth week in a row the upcoming Wimpy Kid book is on the top of the comics chart. It is currently #50 on the overall Amazon book chart. It once again is joined in the #2 slot by the Kindle edition. 
• Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood, the first volume in the series, was mysteriously absent from the chart last week (though The Complete Persepolis did appear), but returns this week in the #3 slot, as would be expected this time of year when college students are buying their books. One could speculate (and I will) that for a period of time past week Amazon had sold out of the first Persepolis but has since restocked.
• I don't know why The Complete Calvin and Hobbes returns at such a high position. Yes the price (about $53) is pretty good, but it's been at that level for a few weeks now. And that doesn't explain the re-appearance of the hardcover edition on the chart either. All I can figure is that it must have been all of the attention that Gavin Aung Than's recent Zen Pencil strip illustrating Watterson's speech to college graduates received in various media outlets.
• All of the new titles on the chart this week are Kindle editions: The customary new Injustice digital comic, the first issue of the New 52 Justice League (on sale this week for 99¢), and John Lewis & Nate Powell's March Book One.
• I had previously excluding Jeffrey Brown's Star Wars: Jedi Academy from the chart as I was under the impression that it was a prose novel for young readers. It turns out that it is a hybrid prose/comic in the same vein as the Wimpy Kid series and thus likely should be on the chart under the criteria that I use. So this week it makes its first appearance on my weekly snapshot, though it should have appeared several times in the past as well.
• Diary Watch: The Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Dork Diaries franchises between them take up nine of the slots on the chart this week, down four last week.
• Kindle Watch: Only eight of the chart positions this week are taken up by Kindle editions, down six from last week and the lowest level that we've seen in quite some time.

Commentary:

• For the third week in a row the upcoming Wimpy Kid book is on the top of the comics chart. It is currently #59 on the overall Amazon book chart. It is joined in the #2 slot by the Kindle edition. Both are still over two months away from release. Expect to see them at or near the top of the chart for the remainder of the year.
• No surprise that the latest digital issue of Injustice is the top debut this week. Other debuts and the print & Kindle editions of the upcoming Hedge Knight graphic novel (a prequel to Game of Thrones), and a big X-Force omnibus from Marvel (due out in March 2014).
• Diary Watch: The Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Dork Diaries franchises between them take up thirteen of the slots on the chart this week, the same as last week.
• Kindle Watch: Fourteen of the chart positions this week are taken up by Kindle editions, up three from last week.
• The 'University Effect' continues, with perennials Maus, Fun Home, Persepolis & Understanding Comics all landing in the top ten this week.

• Somewhat surprisingly, Abina and the Important Men makes a return to the chart this week after a several month absence. The last time it charted was back in January, which makes me suspect that it is now being used as a text for a number of college classes (like Maus, Persepolis, Fun Home, Understanding Comics, Watchmen, and American Born Chinese.)

Commentary:

• When I saw earlier in the week that the title and cover of the upcoming Diary of a Wimpy Kid volume had been announced, I knew that the resulting media attention would send the pre-order on Amazon back up to the top slot. Earlier Wimpy Kid volumes get a boost as well.
• Injustice Watch: The latest issue of Injustice: Gods Among Us debuts high as usual, but only one other issue makes the list this week. It would appear that for the time being, while interest among readers remains high, there are much fewer new readers coming on board and catching up with old issues.
• Other debuts this week are the latest volume of Naruto, the New 52 Batman, and The Walking Dead hardcover edition.
• The rise of titles such as Persepolis, Maus and Fun Home tell us that fall is fast approaching and University students are getting a head start on acquiring their readings for the upcoming semester. It looks as though American Born Chinese might be added to the list of college perennials as well.
• Marvel Watch: Just four titles from Marvel make the chart this week, only half as many as last week as the Pacific Rim prequel drops down out of the top ten.
• Dead Watch: The appearance of the new hardcover gives The Walking Dead four editions on the chart this week, up one from last week.
• Diary Watch: The Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Dork Diaries franchises between them take up thirteen of the slots on the chart this week, up one from last week.
• Kindle Watch: Just thirteen of the chart positions this week are taken up by Kindle editions, down four from last week, and one of the lowest totals we've seen in a while.

Commentary:

• This week's new #1 requires a bit of explanation: It seems that Amazon is offering the Kindle edition of G.I. Joe Cobra Command free to people who pre-ordered G.I. Joe: Retaliation on DVD or Blu-Ray. But the method of redemption is for people who are eligible to purchase it at regular cost, then have a full value rebate or discount applied. So each 'redemption' is actually a sale. (And despite the product description, it is not exclusive and appears that anyone can purchase the graphic novel for the regular price.) 
• In other news, last week's #1, the previously-discounted first volume of Scott Pilgrim on the Kindle, has disappeared entirely from the chart now that the sale is over.
• Injustice Watch: The latest issue of Injustice: Gods Among Us debuts at #2 this week. Two additional issues chart as well, the same as last week.
• The graphic novel version of Hugh Howey's Wool from Amazon's own Jet City Comics makes the chart this week as a pre-order. Interestingly, it will be released as a Kindle Serial, much in the same way that the original Wool novel was released on the Kindle in segments.
• Also debuting this week are the second volumes of Fairest and the New 52 Nightwing.
• Dead Watch: Only three Walking Dead collections make the chart this week, the same as last week. The first compendium gains an additional discount, which pushes it back up into the top ten.
• Marvel Watch: Led by the Pacific Rim prequel OGN, Marvel take eight slots on the chart this week. While that's down two from last week, by historical standards that is still very good for Marvel. (The Kindle sale on Deadpool collections is slated to be over at the end of the week, so I suspect those will slide down off the chart for next Friday's list...)

• A sale earlier in the week on the first color edition volume of Scott Pilgrim on the Kindle propelled it to #1 on the chart this week. The sale is now over so expect it to drop off next week. Presumable the sale was done to stoke interest in the entire series, but so far sales on subsequent volumes haven't shown up on the chart.
• Hyperbole and a Half falls to #74 on the overall Amazon books chart, but that's still good enough for the #2 slot.
• Injustice Watch: The latest issue of Injustice: Gods Among Us debuts at #3 this week. Two additional issues chart as well, down one from last week.
• Dead Watch: Only three Walking Dead collections make the chart this week, down from last week, though all three are in the top 15.
• Batman: The Killing Joke jumps up into the top ten this week, presumable fueled by DCE's announcement at SDCC of a Batman/Superman movie tied with a quote from that landmark graphic novel.
• Marvel Watch: A combination of factors—movie tie-ins, Kindle sales, and the awesomeness of Hawkguy—give Marvel a whopping ten slots on the comics chart this week, which might be a record. But despite a bald Karen Gillan at SDCC, there's still no sight of Guardians of the Galaxy on the chart.

Commentary:

• I have no idea what the Kindle edition of the New 52 Superman #1 is doing back on top of the chart this week. The promotion that caused it to originally shoot up on the chart ended a few weeks ago. Maybe someone is giving away vouchers at SDCC?
• The pre-order for Hyperbole and a Half is at #11 on the overall Amazon books chart, but this week that's only good enough for the #2 slot on the comics chart due to whatever is going on with Superman...
• There's some sort of sale going on for certain Marvel collections on the Kindle; it seems to be mostly Deadpool & Wolverine titles, and one of each shows up for the first time on the chart this week at the bargain price. The first Saga collection for Kindle shows up for the first time as well, but that's at its regular(-ish) price.
• Injustice Watch: The latest issue of Injustice: Gods Among Us debuts at #3 this week. Three additional issues chart as well, up one from last week.
• The other debut this week is the latest volume of Sailor Moon at #21.
• Interest in Marvel's Pacific Rim prequel OGN actually grows in the wake of the movie's release as it moves up into the top ten, which is a good sign for its prospects in the near term.
• Dead Watch: Only four Walking Dead collections make the chart this week, but that's still up one from last week.
• Diary Watch: The Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Dork Diaries franchises between them take up fifteen of the slots on the chart this week, down two from last week.
• Kindle Watch: Twenty-one of the chart positions this week are taken up by Kindle editions, up three from last week.
