Commentary:

  • A new number one this week, as the ninth Saga collection jumps up into the top spot in advance of its release next week. The Kindle edition, which is available now, also debuts in the middle of the chart.
  • The top debut this week is Luke Pearson's Hilda and the Troll, no doubt due to the release of the Netflix series.
  • Two Kindle single issues debut on the chart this week: The first issue of Heroes in Crisis and the new issue of Doomsday Clock. They join last week's debut Batman: Damned, which might very well stick around on the digital chart for a while as DC have announced that they have no intention of reprinting the print edition.
  • The other debuts this week are the second volume of My Hero Academia: Vigilantes, and The Dead Eye and the Deep Blue Sea.

Items with dollar signs ($) were part of a deeply discounted Kindle sale this week
N = New listing appearing on list for first time
R = Item returning to the list after having been off for 1 or more weeks

Commentary:

  • This week's top comic is also the top debut: Goomics, a collection of Web comics that appear to be impenetrable to anyone who doesn't work at Google, but there are enough people who get it that it launched high, displacing even the bargain-priced Game of Thrones adaptation.
  • The Kindle edition of the first issue of Batman: Damned also debuts in the top five, despite that fact that the online version censored the thing that was causing all the attention.
  • Several other debuts this week: The pre-order for the next volume of My Hero Academia; Liana Finck's memoir Passing for Human; the pre-order for Saladin Ahmed & Sami Kivela's Abbott; Jacky Fleming's The Trouble with Women; a Captain Marvel collection; a Carl Barks Donald Duck; and another Hellboy Omnibus.
  • While this listing was compiled on Friday morning as usual, a series of events caused its posting to be delayed until Sunday morning.

DC Comics Month-to-Month Sales: July 2018 - A Nice Day for a Bat Wedding

Batman #50
Greetings, sales charts fans! It's time once again to look at DC's sales figures.

Sorry, this column is running quite late.

Batman, wedding, blah blah blah.

Warning: The commentary below may contain reasoned analysis, speculation (unfounded and otherwise), opinion, and/or snark. Those looking for a more straightforward analysis are directed to John Jackson Miller's excellent Comichron analysis, posted earlier this month over at Comichron!

Please consider the fine print at the end of the column, as it explains several things about how these charts are compiled. We also commend to you our analysis of cumulative DC Rebirth trade collection sales.

(Note that the percentage comparisons are done with total orders including reorder activity.)

5 years : +109.2%
10 years: +167.6%
15 years: + 73.9%

You may have heard that there was a wedding planned for the big Batman #50? And that, while there was a wedding, it didn’t exactly end the way many thought it would? And that there were many, many variants, including store-exclusive variants? And that some stores were upset? And that because of that, DC after-the-fact made Batman #50 returnable? But none of that is reflected here in the first-month sales, as Diamond has not indicated that they adjusted the numbers for returnabiity.

Sales for Batman #51 fell back down to where you might think they would, with the added benefit (for DC) that this is the month that they’ve started to raise the prices of their twice-monthlies up for $3.99. Which means they’re getting up to 33% more money for selling the same number of copies. If history tells us anything, it’s that sales of top-tier titles like Batman are not largely affected by price increases. (But, in the considered opinion of your humble chart chronicler, it does impact things down the line...)

4 - DOOMSDAY CLOCK ($4.99)
11/2017: Doomsday Clock #1 of 12  -- 238,643           [278,805]
12/2017: Doomsday Clock #2 of 12  -- 158,603 (- 34.9%) [181,633]
01/2018: Doomsday Clock #3 of 12  -- 157,714 (-  4.9%) [172,696]
02/2018: --
03/2018: Doomsday Clock #4 of 12  -- 149,581 (-  8.6%) [157,870]
04/2018: --
05/2018: Doomsday Clock #5 of 12  -- 146,817 (-  3.6%) [152,259]
06/2018: --
07/2018: Doomsday Clock #6 of 12  -- 135,155 (- 11.2%)
-----------------
6 months: - 21.7%

This is the first real sign that the scheduling gaps may be having an adverse affect on Clock’s sales; but with previous issues still getting re-order activity, there’s really nothing to be too concerned about.

5 - SUPERMAN ($3.99)
07/2003: Superman #195  --  35,302
07/2008: Superman #678  --  47,670
07/2013: Superman #22   --  42,961

01/2018: Superman #39   --  44,402 (-  6.0%)
02/2018: Superman #40   --  43,776 (-  1.4%)
02/2018: Superman #41   --  42,694 (-  2.5%)
03/2018: Superman #42   --  43,799 (+  2.6%)
03/2018: Superman #43   --  42,291 (-  3.4%)
04/2018: Superman #44   --  42,493 (+  0.5%)
04/2018: Superman #45   --  41,927 (-  1.3%)
05/2018: Special #1     --  43,378 (+  3.5%)
06/2018: --
07/2018: Superman #1    -- 133,703 (+208.2%)
-----------------
6 months: +191.7%
1 year  : +169.8%
2 years : + 21.8%
5 years : +211.2%
10 years: +180.5%
15 years: +278.7%

As with most relaunches these days, there are plenty of variant covers and whatnot for the first issue proper of Bendis’s Superman. So, while inflated, these are still pretty good numbers, above the first-month sales figures for both the New 52 and Rebirth relaunches.

6 - CATWOMAN ($3.99)
07/2003: Catwoman #21   --  23,090
07/2008: Catwoman #81   --  17,766
07/2013: Catwoman #22   --  24,737
07/2014: Catwoman #33   --  18,945
07/2015: Catwoman #42   --  21,983
----------------------------------
05/2016: Catwoman #52   --  16,146
----------------------------------
07/2018: Catwoman #1    -- 121,056 (+649.8%)
-----------------
5 years : +389.4%
10 years: +581.4%
15 years: +424.3%

As with Batman #50, Catwoman #1 was made returnable after-the-fact, and likewise is not marked as such on the Diamond chart. But any way you slice it, that’s still a lot of copies of a Catwoman comic (previous high was a total of 75K for the first issue of the New 52 series). Of course, retailers thought they were ordering the first issue of Mrs. Batman...

11, 13 - JUSTICE LEAGUE ($3.99)
07/2013: Justice League #22 -- 110,194 [124,026]

07/2015: Justice League #42 --  81,291  [84,202]

07/2017: Justice League #25 --  51,507 (-  2.3%)
08/2017: Justice League #26 --  51,048 (-  0.9%)
08/2017: Justice League #27 --  50,023 (-  2.0%)

11/2017: Justice League #33 --  71,769 (-  1.2%)  [72,959]
12/2017: Justice League #34 --  46,958 (- 35.6%)
12/2017: Justice League #35 --  46,228 (-  2.8%)
01/2018: Justice League #36 --  46,043 (-  0.4%)
01/2018: Justice League #37 --  45,313 (-  1.6%)
02/2018: Justice League #38 --  45,314 (+  0.0%)
02/2018: Justice League #39 --  44,148 (-  2.6%)

03/2018: Justice League #41 --  43,675 (-  2.0%)
04/2018: Justice League #42 --  43,423 (-  0.6%)
04/2018: Justice League #43 --  42,959 (-  1.1%)
05/2018: No Justice #1 of 4 --  86,775 (+107.5%)  [89,119]
05/2018: No Justice #2 of 4 --  68,812 (- 19.2%)  [71,966]
05/2018: No Justice #3 of 4 --  65,916 (-  2.7%)  [69,990]
05/2018: No Justice #4 of 4 --  64,342 (+  0.3%)  [70,186]
06/2018: Justice League #1  -- 200,235 (+189.7%) [203,354]
06/2018: Justice League #2  --  86,001 (- 56.1%)  [89,213]
07/2018: Justice League #3  --  80,669 (-  9.6%)
07/2018: Justice League #4  --  77,023 (-  4.5%)
-----------------
6 months: + 72.6%
1 year  : + 51.3%
2 years : - 63.5%
5 years : - 36.4%

The percentage drops are right ton schedule, and we get some reorders for the first two issues (and the final issue of No Justice as well). DC will probably be happy if this can plateau in the 70K range.

Apparently Teen Titans gets its big boost this month the old fashioned way: by introducing a new character: Crush, Lobo’s daughter. (There are a couple other new characters as well, but not with the instant name recognition that would cause retailers to up their orders so drastically). Last month’s Special gets a significant number of reorders as well.

21 - MAN OF STEEL ($3.99)
05/2018: Man of Steel #1 of 6 -- 86,836           [92,824]
06/2018: Man of Steel #2 of 6 -- 76,091 (- 16.9%) [77,100]

06/2018: Man of Steel #5 of 6 -- 68,715 (-  2.6%) [70,298]
07/2018: Man of Steel #6 of 6 -- 67,373 (-  4.2%)

Returnable, so as is standard practice for these charts we have adjusted the sales up 10% from those derived form the Diamond-supplied sales ratios. For why we do this, see the fine print at the end of the column.

While some have called the sales of Man of Steel ‘disappointing,’ one has to remember that they had no variant covers and thus lacked the artificial sales increases that come along with variants these days. And with reorders for every issue so far, these are actually rather solid numbers for a Superman comic. If Superman and Action can settle into this range, DC should be quite happy.

The second Justice League title spinning out of No Justice. All things considered not a terrible debut, but it’s beneath that of the title’s first New 52 issue.

“Flash War” concluded with the oversized 50th issue, and things predictably come back down with issue #51, though if Flash can stay above the 50K mark DC should be happy, especially with the new $1 more price point.

A bit of an expected boost for the 50th issue, but an even bigger boost for #51, a one-shot kicking off writer Steve Orlando’s short run on the title. I’ve written in this column before about how hope springs eternal among Supergirl fans that each new direction will be one that they like, and the same seems to apply for Wonder Woman; but because expectations are so varied no one version of Wonder Woman can ever please everyone.

Also, there is a huge gap here, and DC doesn’t have any comics this month selling in the 40K range.

06/2018: Unexpected #1 -- 28,028
07/2018: Unexpected #2 -- 16,441 (- 41.3%)

That percentage drop is a bit on the high side for a typical second issue.

---

Coming in at #125 is the Teen Titans Go! To the Movies! Special #1, a $1 movie tie-in comic reprinting TTG! stories. At 16,253 copies that’s nearly double what a typical issue of Teen Titans Go! normally sells. (Not counted in the summary statistics at the end of the column, as it is a promotion-priced reprint.)

Penultimate issue. And, IMHO, the best issue of this new Batwoman series by far. Frankly, if the previous sixteen issues had been more like this, it might not be on the chopping block.

06/2018: Sideways #5  -- 16,543 (-  9.6%)
07/2018: Sideways #6  -- 15,152 (-  8.4%)

No doubt these would be selling somewhat better if they had variant covers like most of the rest of the DCU line (maybe a 10-15% boost?). But as the New Age of Heroes books are holding the line at $2.99, they’re also generating less revenue, and at these low sales numbers the only thing really keeping most of them alive is editorial’s beneficence.

---

Coming in at #135 is the DC Beach Blanket Bad Guys Special #1, the latest in DC’s $9.99 80-page short story anthologies, with 15,033 in sales. While the high price somewhat limits their sales appeal, it does mean that the book is #42 on the dollar rankings for July.

Final issue. And with no new Hellblazer series on the horizon, that means that next month will be the first time in over thirty years that DC is not publishing a comic with John Constantine as the main character. I’m sure he’ll be back at some point in the next few years, and will be making guest appearances in other titles, but it sure will be odd not to have Constantine around in his own title.

Penultimate issues for all father Young Animal series. But apparently YA will be continuing in some fashion, as a new issue of Doom Patrol has been (re-)solicited and a new story arc of DP is coming at some point (likely along with when the TV series debuts). And Way is allegedly planning new YA books for sometime in the undetermined future.

Total sales for DC were up again this month, despite having far fewer new comics: 61 in July compared to 74 in each of the previous two months. This led to some of the highest average sales for the DCU and DC as a whole in quite some time. The high average is in large part due to Batman #50, as can be seen by the fact that the median DCU sales are a much more modest 28,170, compared to the average DCU sales of 50,334, which makes for quite a skew! But it’s also a factor of it being a Doomsday Clock month, and the debut issues of the new Superman and Catwoman series, there being several comics selling in the 60K & 70K ranges, and the ending of some of the lower-selling DCU series (like New Super-Man, Cyborg, and Bane)

There have been a handful of times since Diamond started reporting actual sales in February 2003 when DC had 61 or fewer new comics titles in a month: February 2004, April 2004 & May 2007 (61 each); and January 2004 when they had just 59. (The highest was in October 2007, when they had 96!)

(The two-year comparisons this month are with the second month of Rebirth—when DC and the DCU titles had their best average sales ever—so don’t get too depressed by those percentages.)

The Fine Print (Disclaimers, et cetera)

The numbers above are estimates for comic-book sales in the North American direct market, as calculated by ICv2.com and Comichron, according to the chart and index information provided by Diamond Comic Distributors.

ICv2.com's and Comichron’s estimates are somewhat lower than the actual numbers, but they are consistent from month to month, so the trends they show are fairly accurate. Since it's a "month-to-month" column, the comments, unless otherwise noted, are on the most recent month.

Bear in mind that the figures measure sales of physical comics to retailers, not customers. Also, these numbers do not include many sales to bookstores, newsstands, libraries, other mass-market retail chains, or the United Kingdom. Re-orders are included, so long as they either reached stores in a book's initial calendar month of release or were strong enough to make the chart again in a subsequent month; or they show up in the year-end Top 1000. Keep in mind that sales for some titles may include incentives to acquire variants and not every unit sold is necessarily even intended to be sold to a customer.

If additional copies of an issue did appear on the chart after a book's initial calendar month of release, you can see the total number of copies sold in brackets behind those issues (e.g. "[36,599]"). Likewise, any lower numbers due to returns or other factors returns will also be reflected in the brackets. Should more than one issue have shipped in a month which is relevant for one of the long-term comparisons, the average between them will be used. Titles which are returnable have their numbers artificially adjusted down by Diamond. To make up for that this column increases the reported numbers for those titles by 10%. Which is likely also wrong, but it's a different and likely less wrong kind of wrong, and experience has shown that this leads to sales figures which are more consistent.

Titles released under the All-Ages line and magazines, such as Mad, mostly sell through channels other than the direct market, so direct-market sales don't tell us much about their performance. Likewise, Digital First comics are published online before print, and may do a significant amount of their sales in that arena. For most Vertigo titles, collection sales tend to be a significant factor, so the numbers for those books should be taken with a grain of salt as well.

Please keep in mind that raw sales numbers do not tell us about how profitable a book is for a publisher or for the creators.

Above all, do not allow sales numbers to dictate your purchasing and enjoyment of a particular comic. If you enjoy reading a comic series then go right on buying and reading that comic, no matter what the sales figures say.

** Two asterisks after a given month in the average charts mean that one or more periodical release did not make the Top 300 chart in that month. In those cases, it's assumed that said releases sold as many units as the No. 300 comic on the chart for that month for the purposes of the chart, although its actual sales are likely to be less than that.

Opinions expressed in this column are mine alone, and do not necessarily reflect those of my employer; The International Brotherhood of Motorcycle Campers; or my former neighbor's dog Miles.
