Commentary:
  • The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse stays on top for the fifteenth straight week.
  • Last week's Avatar: The Last Airbender surge explodes into full-on Avatar-mania this week, taking up eighteen spots in the top fifty, including six of the top ten. Most of these are sale-priced Kindle editions (which appeared on the chart before as physical copies) but there are a few of the hardcover library editions as well.
  • This top debut this week is the pre-order for Tommy Siegel's cartoon collection I Hope This Helps (due out in October). Aside from all the aforementioned Avatar books, the other debuts are pre-orders for the next volumes of the manga series Demon Slayer & Dragon Ball Super.
  • Things have pretty much returned to pre-pandemic levels as far as the balance between Kindle Unlimited (etc.) and regular items on the chart this week.
  • Sorry this is going up so late—rankings were compiled Friday evening but aren't being posted until Saturday morning.
  • Wash you hands. Wear a face mask when in public, enclosed spaces. Practice sensible social distancing. Read comics.

R = Item returning to the list after having been off for 1 or more weeks

Commentary:
  • The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse stays on top for the fourteenth straight week.
  • There was a huge surge of Avatar: The Last Airbender titles onto the chart this week, both Kindle and print editions. Presumably this is because the animated series came to Netflix this past week (where it is currently the #1 streaming title for North America).
  • The only debut this week is an issue of the digital-first series Batman: The Adventures Continue.
  • While there were still a good chunk of Kindle Unlimited, Prime Reading, and other types of digital comics that we strip out of the list on the chart this week, there were a good deal fewer than in previous recent weeks. Partly this is due to the aforementioned Avatar surge displacing a bunch of other titles from the top fifty, but I suspect it's also due to the fact that Amazon's print book distribution is no longer delaying shipping for three weeks out like in recent past weeks.
  • Wash you hands. And practice sensible social distancing. Read comics.

DC Comics Month-to-Month Sales: March 2020 - The Last Dance?

Batman #91 cover
Greetings, sales charts fans! It's time once again to look at DC's sales figures—for the last time?

This could very well be the last of these month-to-month sales columns. Not because I’m tired of doing them (though I have been doing them for over six years now!), but because after March DC will not be exclusively using Diamond as their North American distributor. In the wake of C19, they’ve also enlisted two other distributors for the U.S.: UCS and Lunar. So while Damond will likely continue to releases their sales indices, it is unknown if the other distributors will also release any sales numbers, and comparing just the Diamond DC sales before and after the C19 divide wouldn’t be comparing apples to apples.

So this isn’t a definite goodbye, but unless either the two new distributors release their sales figures or I’m able to figure out a clever way to estimate them, it isn’t likely that I’ll pick up the (virtual) pen to do these again. What is definite is that there will not be a column for April, as Diamond isn’t shipping any April comics. If we’re able to resume again, it will be June at the earlier (for the May sales chart).

In any event, it’s been interesting these past 6+ years. Thanks to Heidi MacDonald for asking me to take over the DC M2M column for The Beat back in 2014, and to Marc-Oliver Frisch, the former wrangler of the DC M2M chart, for recommending me in the first place.

Take care, stay safe. Wash your hands. And hopefully I’ll see you again someday on the other side.

Warning: The commentary below may contain reasoned analysis, speculation (unfounded and otherwise), opinion, and/or snark. Those looking for a more straightforward analysis are directed to John Jackson Miller's excellent Comichron analysis, posted earlier this month over at Comichron!

Please consider the fine print at the end of the column, as it explains several things about how these charts are compiled.

(Note that the percentage comparisons are done with total orders including reorder activity.)

First month Batman orders finally start seeing a sales boost in line with new character Punchline having been declared the Hot New Character Find of 2020 (by whom?). Issue #89 sees
a whopping 16K in re-orders for a second printing (with a 3rd printing on the way eventually), and this month’s issues return the Batman sales level to where it was about a year ago. Reportedly the next issue—to feature Punchline’s origin—had a print run over 200K copies, but it’s been delayed and we’ll have to wait and see what happens there (if we ever find out...)

Also of note here is that issue #90 out-sold issue #91 in regular covers, but the opposite was true for the cardstock covers. There seems to be no reasonable explanation for this, as both cardstock covers had the same artist, so ???

And then the subsequent issues see their sales drop right back to where they were before the renumbering. At least there were no cardstock covers this month (though plenty of variants for issue #750, and the typical non-cardboard variants for the other two issues).

13 - STRANGE ADVENTURES (Black Label) ($4.99)
03/2020: Strange Adventures #1 of 12  -- 64,550

Returnable, so we’ve adjusted the estimated sales numbers derived from the Diamond-supplied sales index by 10%. For why we do this, please see the fine print at the end of the column.

Tom King reunites with his frequent collaborator Mitch Gerads and they add Doc Shaner to the team for a revisionist take on Adam Strange. A pretty good debut with more than twice as many first month sales as the first issue of King & Gerads’s Mister Miracle, but I’d expect to see Strange Adventures follow a more traditional sales trajectory than MM and eventually end up with sales similar in the upper 30K range.

12 - ROBIN 80TH ANNIVERSARY SUPER SPECTACULAR ($9.99)
03/2020: Robin 80th #1 -- 60,011

Sales of 60K are perfectly respectable for a $10 one-shot (placing at #3 this month on the dollar chart). Yes, it’s even significantly less than the Flash 80th anniversary issue, but seeing as Robin doesn’t currently have his own ongoing series, it’s a decent number. As with all the other 80th anniversary issues, there are a slew of variant covers propping up sales.

58/61 - DCEASED: UNKILLABLES ($4.99/$5.99)
05/2019: DCeased #1 of 6     -- 242,365           [249,146]

Not a bad second issue percentage drop, but clearly Unkillables is not getting the dedicated readership that the original DCeased series had.

03/2020: Curse Knight #8 of 8 -- 52,985 (-  1.8%)
-----------------
6 months: - 21.9%
2 years : - 31.3%

Ends at a respectable 52K, but again we see a case of where the follow-up to a smash hit limited series just cannot hold on to the initial series’ sales.

That’s not a bad second issue percentage drop, but considering that this is basically a continuation of the previous series, it makes one wonder if a Season 2 relaunch was a good idea? I would appear that a non-trivial amount of people checked out during the mini-series and didn’t come back.

Returnable, so we’ve adjusted the estimated sales numbers derived from the Diamond-supplied sales index by 10%. For why we do this, please see the fine print at the end of the column.

This is exhibit one for why DC are slowly moving away from the direct market. I will not be surprised if sales of the eventual collected edition far exceed those of the individual issues.

There were 64 ‘new’ comics from DC in March, down from 77 in both January and February. Of note, none of DC’s Black Label Prestige-Plus comics shipped in March, depressing not just their total series and issue numbers, but also average sales and especially dollar share. Of this month’s 64 comics three were reprints and five were mixtures of reprints and new material.

The Fine Print (Disclaimers, et cetera)

The numbers above are estimates for comic-book sales in the North American direct market, as calculated by ICv2.com and Comichron, according to the chart and index information provided by Diamond Comic Distributors.

ICv2.com's and Comichron’s estimates are somewhat lower than the actual numbers, but they are consistent from month to month, so the trends they show are fairly accurate. Since it's a "month-to-month" column, the comments, unless otherwise noted, are on the most recent month.

Bear in mind that the figures measure sales of physical comics to retailers, not customers. Also, these numbers do not include many sales to bookstores, newsstands, libraries, other mass-market retail chains, or the United Kingdom. Re-orders are included, so long as they either reached stores in a book's initial calendar month of release or were strong enough to make the chart again in a subsequent month; or they show up in the year-end Top 1000. Keep in mind that sales for some titles may include incentives to acquire variants and not every unit sold is necessarily even intended to be sold to a customer.

If additional copies of an issue did appear on the chart after a book's initial calendar month of release, you can see the total number of copies sold in brackets behind those issues (e.g. "[36,599]"). Likewise, any lower numbers due to returns or other factors returns will also be reflected in the brackets. Should more than one issue have shipped in a month which is relevant for one of the long-term comparisons, the average between them will be used. Titles which are returnable have their numbers artificially adjusted down by Diamond. To make up for that this column increases the reported numbers for those titles by 10%. Which is likely also wrong, but it's a different and likely less wrong kind of wrong, and experience has shown that this leads to sales figures which are more consistent.

Titles released under the All-Ages line and magazines, such as Mad, mostly sell through channels other than the direct market, so direct-market sales don't tell us much about their performance. Likewise, Digital First comics are published online before print, and may do a significant amount of their sales in that arena. DC Giants are released first to Walmarts and may receive a significant amount of sales through that outlet. For most Black Label, Young Animal, Sandman Universe, and related titles, collection sales tend to be a significant factor, so the numbers for those books should be taken with a grain of salt as well.

Please keep in mind that raw sales numbers do not tell us about how profitable a book is for a publisher or for the creators.

Above all, do not allow sales numbers to dictate your purchasing and enjoyment of a particular comic. If you enjoy reading a comic series then go right on buying and reading that comic, no matter what the sales figures say.

** Two asterisks after a given month in the average charts mean that one or more periodical release did not make the Top 300 chart in that month. In those cases, it's assumed that said releases sold as many units as the No. 300 comic on the chart for that month for the purposes of the chart, although its actual sales are likely to be less than that.

Opinions expressed in this column are mine alone, and do not necessarily reflect those of my employer; The American Association of Bioanalysts; or my former neighbor's dog Miles.
