Commentary:

  • The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse stays on top for the seventh straight week, and the next three items are on the same place on the chart as last week as well.
  • The biggest change to the comics charts this week is not actually reflected here: There were a ton of Kindle Unlimited and Prime Reading titles on the chart this week, to the point where after I removed them (as is the policy for compiling these charts) I barely had enough items to fill all fifty slots! Obviously this has to do with people reading digital comics while self-isolating. Additionally, Amazon is severely delaying shipments of physical books so they can use their capacity to ship more essential supplies, which would also be suppressing physical comics orders.
  • The top debut this week is Pearls Goes Hollywood, the new Pearls Before Swine collection. Joining it are an oldish Garfield compilation, and the first two volumes of the manga series Toilet-bound Hanako-kun (?! — must be an anime adaptation or something?)
  • Hope you all are staying safe and washing your hands. And hopefully reading some comics!

Commentary:

  • It seems a bit frivolous to talk about comic sales right now, but that's mostly what we do here at YACB these days, so here you go. The only potential sign of change I saw on the chart this week is a larger-than-normal number of Kindle Unlimited items that had to be excised from the summary, but it's hard to say at this point if that's a long-term trend or just a one-off week.
  • The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse stays on top for the sixth straight week.
  • The top debut this week is Ben Katchor's The Dairy Restaurant, an odd sort that isn't quite a comic and isn't quite all illustrated prose either.
  • Also debuting this week is the new volume of the manga Beastars, and it brings along all the previous volumes as well. It is no doubted boosted by the debut of the anime on Netflix last week.
  • Rounding out our debuts this week are the graphic novel adaptation of The City of Ember (oddly, since it was originally published back in 2012!) and the Kindle edition of The Odd 1s Out: The First Sequel.
  • Note: While (once again) this is being posted on Saturday morning, as always you can rest assured that the rankings were taken as of Friday morning at the post's timestamp.
  • Wash your hands!

DC Comics Month-to-Month Sales: January 2020 - Perfect Vision

Wonder Woman #750
Greetings, sales charts fans! It's time once again to look at DC's sales figures.

2020 did not start off well for DC. It’s not necessarily that average sales were down—they were the worst of the Rebirth era, but not as bad as things were in the waning days of the New 52—but that so many long-running series had their lowest single issue sales in quite some time:

Batman: Lowest since before the New 52 era
Flash: Lowest since 2008
Harley Quinn: Lowest since the series returned in 2013
Nightwing: Lowest since before 2001 (and possibly ever...)
Teen Titans: Lowest since the series returned back in 2003
Aquaman: Lowest since before the New 52 era
Red Hood: Lowest ever
Batgirl: Lowest since before 2000

So as the only way that DC knows to give their line a sales boost is with a Reboot, they’re planning yet another for later this year: The 5G or Generation Five, set to kick off with Generation Zero on Free Comic Book Day. Or at least, that was the plan before co-publisher Dan DiDio left. Now those plans seem to be somewhat up in the air. We may get more clarity in the coming weeks. Or not...

Warning: The commentary below may contain reasoned analysis, speculation (unfounded and otherwise), opinion, and/or snark. Those looking for a more straightforward analysis are directed to John Jackson Miller's excellent Comichron analysis, posted earlier this month over at Comichron!

Please consider the fine print at the end of the column, as it explains several things about how these charts are compiled.

(Note that the percentage comparisons are done with total orders including reorder activity.)

Wonder Woman celebrates her 80th anniversary with a return to legacy numbering (again—the last time was with issue #600 in June 2010) and an oversized and -priced issue in the vein of the recent Action #1000 and Detective #1000. And while it doesn’t come close to the sales of Superman and Batman’s big anniversary issues, it does mark the first time that Wonder Woman has topped the charts and is the best-selling issue as far back as my records go (2001). (We’ll note that Wonder Woman regularly sold this number of copies—and even sometimes higher—back in the 1960s and 1970s, though that was true for most comics in those days!)

Fun fact: While $10 is a lot for a single issue of a comic, since Wonder Woman published three issues in January 2019 it actually cost you less to buy all of the issues of Wonder Woman released this month than it did a year ago!

Oh yeah, we should mention that, like the previously mentioned anniversary issues, this had a slew of variants.

Issue #87: Regular: 56,307. Cardstock: 17,819. (3.2:1)

Last month we predicted that Batman would see a spike in sales this month with the arrival of the new creative team. We were wrong: sales actually drop this month, with issue #87 having the lowest sales of a regular issue of Batman since the start of the New 52. Considering that DC had King wrap up his Batman run early as they were reportedly unhappy with the sales, this has to really sting.

It would appear that as many people took this as an opportunity to jump off and to jump on. That there were a lot of people who were buying Batman specifically for the story that King was telling. Now who knows—maybe retailers under ordered and we’ll see a lot of re-orders show up on the chart next month. Time will tell if dumping King was a good move or not...

Issue #86: Regular: 23,385. Cardstock: 6,566. (3.6:1)

Three issues this month to make up for just one issue in December. Also the first time that a regular issue of The Flash has sold below 30K since 2008. But DC will keep pumping out two issues every month, even after next month’s 80th anniversary issue and legacy renumbering.

133/257 - DAPHNE BYRNE (Hill House) (Black Label) ($3.99/$4.99)
01/2020: Daphne Byrne #1 of 6 -- 24,017

Regular: 15,123*. Cardstock: 6,711. (2.3:1)

According to the Diamond chart, the regular cover was returnable but the cardstock cover was not. So we’ve adjusted the estimated sales numbers derived from the Diamond-supplied sales index by 10%. For why we do this, please see the fine print at the end of the column.

The top-selling non-DCU comic for January. The fourth Hill House title, and so far each successive title has debuted lower than the previous. Will it all be too much for the market to handle at once?

01/2020: Basketful Heads #4 of 7 -- 22,244 (- 12.7%)

The flagship Hill House title is holding up well, and the new imprint seems to be an improvement over Vertigo—when was the last time a Vertigo title was still selling over 20K by its fourth issue?

Ending with issue #42, due to “story reasons.” Those reasons being not enough of you bought Supergirl when it was Kara & Krypto having adventures in space, and now we have to suffer through the interminable “Year of the Villain” tie-in with Kara infected by the Batman Who Laughs.

The Fine Print (Disclaimers, et cetera)

The numbers above are estimates for comic-book sales in the North American direct market, as calculated by ICv2.com and Comichron, according to the chart and index information provided by Diamond Comic Distributors.

ICv2.com's and Comichron’s estimates are somewhat lower than the actual numbers, but they are consistent from month to month, so the trends they show are fairly accurate. Since it's a "month-to-month" column, the comments, unless otherwise noted, are on the most recent month.

Bear in mind that the figures measure sales of physical comics to retailers, not customers. Also, these numbers do not include many sales to bookstores, newsstands, libraries, other mass-market retail chains, or the United Kingdom. Re-orders are included, so long as they either reached stores in a book's initial calendar month of release or were strong enough to make the chart again in a subsequent month; or they show up in the year-end Top 1000. Keep in mind that sales for some titles may include incentives to acquire variants and not every unit sold is necessarily even intended to be sold to a customer.

If additional copies of an issue did appear on the chart after a book's initial calendar month of release, you can see the total number of copies sold in brackets behind those issues (e.g. "[36,599]"). Likewise, any lower numbers due to returns or other factors returns will also be reflected in the brackets. Should more than one issue have shipped in a month which is relevant for one of the long-term comparisons, the average between them will be used. Titles which are returnable have their numbers artificially adjusted down by Diamond. To make up for that this column increases the reported numbers for those titles by 10%. Which is likely also wrong, but it's a different and likely less wrong kind of wrong, and experience has shown that this leads to sales figures which are more consistent.

Titles released under the All-Ages line and magazines, such as Mad, mostly sell through channels other than the direct market, so direct-market sales don't tell us much about their performance. Likewise, Digital First comics are published online before print, and may do a significant amount of their sales in that arena. DC Giants are released first to Walmarts and may receive a significant amount of sales through that outlet. For most Black Label, Young Animal, Sandman Universe, and related titles, collection sales tend to be a significant factor, so the numbers for those books should be taken with a grain of salt as well.

Please keep in mind that raw sales numbers do not tell us about how profitable a book is for a publisher or for the creators.

Above all, do not allow sales numbers to dictate your purchasing and enjoyment of a particular comic. If you enjoy reading a comic series then go right on buying and reading that comic, no matter what the sales figures say.

** Two asterisks after a given month in the average charts mean that one or more periodical release did not make the Top 300 chart in that month. In those cases, it's assumed that said releases sold as many units as the No. 300 comic on the chart for that month for the purposes of the chart, although its actual sales are likely to be less than that.
