Top Comic Book Movies of 2024

Deadpool & Wolverine

Here are the grosses of comic book-related movies released in 2024—ranked by domestic (U.S.) box office—according to Box Office Mojo:

  1. Deadpool & Wolverine: $637M ($1.34B)
  2. Venom: The Last Dance: $140M ($479M)
  3. The Garfield Movie: $92M ($235M)
  4. Joker: Folie à Deux: $58M ($208M)
  5. Madame Web: $44M ($100M)
  6. Kraven the Hunter: $25M ($62M)
  7. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba – To the Hashira Training: $18M ($44M)
  8. Here: $12M ($16M)
  9. The Crow: $9M ($24M)
  10. Spy x Family – Code: White: $8M ($60M)
  11. Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle: $7M ($100M)
  12. My Hero Academia: You're Next: $5M ($32M)
  13. Look Back: $2M ($13M)
  14. Robot Dreams: $875K ($4.7M)
  15. They Shot the Piano Player: $59K ($381K)

Once again we've put the worldwide box office figures in parentheses, where you can see that many (most?) movies now do the bulk of their business overseas.

Aside from Deadpool & Wolverine, it was not a great year for comic book movies. Sony's decision to flood the theaters with movies based on Spider-Man villains tanked (although Venom 3 did okay internationally). And both Here and The Crow were highly publicized duds, both critically and at the box office.

Movies scheduled for release in 2025 include: Dog Man (Jan); Attack on Titan the Movie: The Last Attack (Feb); Captain America: Brave New World (Feb); Mickey 17 (Mar); Witch Watch (Mar); Thunderbolts* (May); Dan Da Dan: Evil Eye (Jun); Superman (Jul); Jujutsu Kaisen: Hidden Inventory/Premature Death – The Movie (Jul); The Smurfs Movie (Jul); The Fantastic Four: First Steps (Jul); Red Sonja (Aug); Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Infinity Castle (Sep); Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc (Oct); Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle: The Last Ronin (Dec)

Top Comic Book Movies of 2023

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

Here are the grosses of comic book-related movies released in 2023—ranked by domestic (U.S.) box office—according to Box Office Mojo:

  1. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse: $381M ($690M)
  2. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3: $358M ($846M)
  3. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania: $215M ($476M)
  4. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom: $124M ($434M)
  5. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem: $119M ($180M)
  6. The Flash: $108M ($271M)
  7. The Marvels: $85M ($206M)
  8. Blue Beetle: $72M ($131M)
  9. Shazam! Fury of the Gods: $58M ($134M)
  10. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba – To the Swordsmith Village: $10M ($56M)
  11. Knights of the Zodiac: $1M ($7M)
  12. Shortcomings: $0.7M ($0.7M)

This year we put the Worldwide box office in parentheses after the domestic box office, where you can see that Guardians 3 was the top comic book film worldwide, and many (though not all) of the movies did more business overseas than domestically.

Movies scheduled for 2024 release include: Madame Web (Feb); They Shot the Piano Player (Feb); Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba – To the Hashira Training (Feb); Robot Dreams (May); The Crow (Jun); The Garfield Movie (May); Deadpool and Wolverine (Jul); Hellboy: The Crooked Man (Jul); Kraven the Hunter (Aug Dec); Joker: Folie à Deux (Oct); Look Back (Oct); Venom 3 (Nov); Red Sonja (TBD).

Top Comic Book Movies of 2022

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

Here are the domestic grosses of comic book-related movies released in 2022, according to Box Office Mojo:

  1. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever: $454M
  2. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness: $411M
  3. The Batman: $369M
  4. Thor: Love and Thunder: $343M
  5. Black Adam: $168M
  6. DC League of Super-Pets: $94M
  7. Morbius: $74M
  8. Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie: $35M
  9. Marry Me: $22M
  10. One Piece Film: Red: $13M

This was closer to a normal year than the previous two pandemic years, though the box office is still recovering and many high-profile comic book movies that had been planned for release in 2022 were pushed back to 2023 (or, in the case of Batgirl, cancelled all together.)

Movies coming up in 2023 include: Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (Feb); Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba – To the Swordsmith Village (Mar); Shazam! Fury of the Gods (Mar); Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (May); Knights of the Zodiac (May); Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Jun); The Flash (Jun); Shortcomings (Aug); Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (Aug); Blue Beetle (Aug); Kraven the Hunter (Oct); The Marvels (Nov); Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (Dec).

As always, release dates are subject to change.

Top Comic Book Movies of 2021

Here are the domestic grosses of comic book-related movies released in 2021, according to Box Office Mojo:

  1. Spider-Man: No Way Home: $783M
  2. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings: $225M
  3. Venom: Let There Be Carnage: $214M
  4. Black Widow: $184M
  5. Eternals: $165M
  6. The Addams Family 2: $56M
  7. The Suicide Squad: $56M
  8. Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train: $50M
  9. Old: $48M
  10. The King's Man: $37M
  11. My Hero Academia: World Heroes' Mission: $12M

This was another COVID-influenced year at the box office, with differing release strategies leading to different box office outcomes and expectations, as well as timing being a big factor. Besides being a highly-anticipated MCU entry, Spider-Man: No Way Home was also fortunate to have been released just before the Omicron wave hit. The Suicide Squad was released simultaneously in theaters and on HBOMax which likely contributed to its muted box office, while Black Widow was released simultaneously in theaters and VOD (which led to a lawsuit by its star).

2022 looks to be possibly a return to a more normal year, with the following movies on the schedule: Marry Me (Feb); The Batman (Mar); Jujutsu Kaisen 0 (Mar); Morbius (Apr); Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (May); DC League of Super-Pets (May Jul); Thor: Love and Thunder (Jul); Black Adam (Jul Oct); Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Part One (Oct); The Flash (Nov); Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (Nov); Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (Dec); Shazam! Fury of the Gods (Dec); Batgirl (TBD).

UPDATE (Mar 9): Warner Bros. has updated their movie slate: DC League of Super-Pets is now scheduled for July; Black Adam is now October; The Flash & Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom have been pushed back to 2023; and Shazam! Fury of the Gods has been moved up to December 2022.

Top Comic Book Movies of 2020

Here are the domestic grosses of comic book-related movies released in 2020, according to Box Office Mojo:

  1. Birds of Prey: $84M
  2. Wonder Woman 1984: $46M
  3. The New Mutants: $24M
  4. My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising: $13M
  5. Bloodshot: $13M
  6. The Empty Man: $3M
  7. Lupin III: The First: $0.1M

Obviously COVID-19 restrictions played havoc with the movie release schedule in 2020. Of the movies above, only Birds of Prey was released before the pandemic lockdowns hit, with Bloodshot being particularly unlucky as it was released on March 13 right before widespread lockdowns were enacted. Most wide-release, tent-pole movies were delayed and delayed and delayed again, until 2021 (or perhaps later). Wonder Woman 1984 was released to both theaters and HBO Max on December 25, while the long-delayed The New Mutants was finally dumped into theaters in August.

Movies 'scheduled' for release in 2021 include: Demon Slayer- Kimetsu no Yaiba (April); Black Widow (July); The Suicide Squad (Aug); Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (Sep); Venom: Let There Be Carnage (Sep); The Addams Family 2 (Oct); Eternals (Nov); Spider-Man: No Way Home (Dec); The King's Men (Dec).

(Moreso than previous years, this schedule is subject to change!)

(Really unsure about that domestic box office figure for I Kill Giants; neither Box Office Mojo nor The Numbers show any U.S. box office for the film, though both are cited by Wikipedia for $183,754. Clearly the number cannot be zero as it did get a limited release in the U.S., so let's just go with the Wikipedia figure.)

Link Bait: Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Premiere Red Carpet Photos

Last night was the premiere of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy in Hollywood. Disney sent along a bunch photos from the red carpet, so far be it from me to not share them with you!

Bradley Cooper

This is Bradley Cooper, who is the voice of Rocket in the movie. He is a movie star; you can tell he is a movie star because he is cool enough to show up to a movie premiere in a black leather jacket and unshaven. If you are a movie star you need not wear a tie if you don't want to.

Bradley Cooper's watch

This is Bradley Cooper's watch. I'm not sure why it was important to have a photo of Bradley Cooper's watch, but we have one. Is it an expensive watch? I do not know anything about watches.

Glenn Close

This is Glenn Close, a real movie star. She has Oscar nominations. She plays Nova Prime in this movie. Roll that around in your head: Glenn Close is Nova Prime. First Marvel got Robert Redford in Captain America, now Glenn Close in Guardians of the Galaxy. How does Marvel do it?

Chris Pratt

This is Chris Pratt, who is Star-Lord Peter Quill in the movie. Note that he is wearing a tie (his mother raised him properly).

Chris Pratt's watch

This is Chris Pratt's watch. Are men's watch pictures a thing now?

Anna Faris & Chris Pratt

Chris Pratt is married to actress Anna Faris, star of TV's Mom. They make a cute couple, yes?

Anna Faris

Here is Anna Faris alone. The photographer should have noticed that there's a gun growing out of her right shoulder...

Zoe Saldana

This is Zoe Saldana, who stars as Gamora. She is painted up green in the movie, and from the trailers it looks like she gets to kick plenty of butt. She was blue in Avatar.

Nathan Fillion

This is Nathan Fillion, who apparently has a cameo in the movie. He is not wearing a tie, but at least he has on a sport coat.

Karen Gillen

This is Karen Gillen. She plays Nebula in the movie, a role for which she shaved her head bald (as you can see, her hair is growing back...)

Vin Diesel

This is Vin Diesel, who voices Groot in the movie. Also not wearing a tie, but he could break me in two without breaking a sweat, so I'll let it slide.

Lee Pace

This is Lee Pace, who plays the main bad guy in the movie, Ronan the Accuser. He was one of the stars of Pushing Daisies, one of the best television shows ever. He is wearing a tie.

Emily Osment

This is Emily Osment. She is not in the movie, but is the star of the new ABC Family sitcom Young & Hungry, and was on Hannah Montana for many years. Disney sent a lot of photos of people from the premiere who I don't think are in the movie, and who I don't recognize. They should send along a cheat sheet with the photos for those of us who are celebrity challenged.

I have no idea who these people are.

Like I have no idea who these people are. But it looks like this kid's mom took him to the Guardians of the Galaxy movie premiere, so she probably gets the Mother of the Week Award!

Elizabeth HenstridgeMing-Na WenChloe Bennet

Elizabeth Henstridge, Ming-Na Wen, and Chloe Bennet, three of the stars of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Glenn Close & Bradley Cooper

Glenn Close looks like she is very apprehensive about meeting Bradley Cooper. Does she not realize that he is a Movie Star, like she is? But then, she has Oscar nominations, and he does not. Mr. Cooper, you are not allowed to put your hand on Ms. Close's shoulder until you have at least two Oscar nominations!

Lee Pace and Zoe Saldana

Lee Pace and Zoe Saldana look far happier to be in each other's company. As we saw from the earlier picture, Mr. Pace is wearing a tie so Ms. Saldana knows that he is an actor at a movie premiere and not a random ruffian accosting her before the premiere.

The Avengers Premiere Photos

Disney just sent out photos from The Avengers World Premiere. I've got nothing else to post, so let's take a look at some link bait:

The Avengers Premiere

The Avengers Premiere: Stan Lee

Stan Lee, posing with a SHIELD-mobile.

The Avengers Premiere: Scarlett Johansson

Scarlett Johansson, with a funky dress and funky hair.

The Avengers Premiere: World's Most Awesome Dad

I don't know who this guy is. Is he in the movie? Doesn't matter; he brought his young daughter and her friend to the premiere of The Avengers, so he gets the award for Most Awesome Dad.

The Avengers Premiere: Jeremy Renner

Jeremy Renner in an awesome silver suit that shouldn't work, yet it does.

The Avengers Premiere: Samuel L. Jackson

Samuel L. Jackson wearing a dorky hat. Because he's Sam Effing Jackson and he can wear whatever dorky thing he wants and it can't detract from his coolness.

The Avengers Premiere: Clark Gregg

Clark Gregg, on the other hand, can wear whatever cool suit he wants and still come off as dorky.

The Avengers Premiere: Cobie Smulders

Hey, it's whatsername, from that show with Dr. Horrible .

The Avengers Premiere: Chris Hemsworth

"Hello ladies. I'm Chris Hemsworth.  I have blonde hair and blue eyes and broad shoulders and unbutton my shirt just enough to show off my gold chain."

The Avengers Premiere: Joss Whedon

Joss, we know you're a genius, so shouldn't you know better than to wear white shoes with a black suit?

The Avengers Premiere: Full Cast

The assembled cast, being rained on by confetti.

The Avengers Premiere: SHIELD-mobile

Where can I buy a SHIELD-mobile?

Enchanted

LA Times has a feature story about Disney's upcoming Enchanted, along with a video clip from the movie featuring Amy Adams singing "That's How You Know."

I was on the fence about his movie, but after seeing the clip I'm totally in. Sure, one look at the trailer and you can figure out exactly how the movie is going to play out, but it's got big all-singing all-dancing musical numbers in Central Park!
