Empty Graphic Novel Shelves

The comics & graphic novels shelves are empty, because Google has come to take them away for scanning. (They'll be back in a week or so.) Not sure how much useful they'll be having been scanned; they cannot be presented online because they're under copyright, and I imagine that the OCR for searching on the hand lettering in most comics will be hit-or-miss.

Ohhhh, see, here I thought you worked at a city or county library and was astounded that your branch was able to devote so much space to graphic novels. It all became clear once I noticed that umich in the url. Lucky.

Wow. I also just checked UCI's catalog* and they have a Graphic Novel section comprised of 83 books. Again, I reiterate: luck.

*note: UCI is my local university.

That's just fantasic. How well do they scan them (that is, how readable do the pages look)? Are they able to capture the text for searching like they (presumably) do with (text) books? Once you see some online, please post links; I find this whole thing fascinating.

At this point we have no idea how the OCR will for for searching. We'll have to wait and see.

However, I can say with pretty much certainty that most if not all of these will not be available online, due to copyright restrictions. They will be searching only.
