DC Comics Month-to Month Sales: December
2015 - And Lo, There Shall Be a Rebirth…
Greetings, sales charts fans! It's time
once again to look at DC's sales figures.
December was a mixed bag for DC,
sales-wise. They published a whopping 94 different comics, up from 75 in
November and tying the most comics in a month since I took over the charts 2
years ago. October 2014 also had 94 comics (and December 2014 had 93). However,
this month they sold 300K units fewer than in October 2014, which is kind of a
sign of the times.
Variant covers still drive sales, and
this month gave us a glimpse into how much. Due to the nature of this month's
Freely-orderable variants (f.o.v.s), a good number of books that have had
f.o.v.s in the past months did not get one this month. Most of those books
dropped in sales between 5K and 7K, which gives us a good idea of how much the
lower-selling titles sales are being propped up by the f.o.v. program. In some
cases it's 20-25% of their total sales.
The other big influence on this month’s
sales is the “Robin War” crossover. The lower-tier titles joining in saw fairly
large boosts of around 6K. So yeah, crossovers still work for short-term sales
gains.
Oh, and then there's Rebirth…
As reported here at The Beat and
elsewhere in recent days, DC is planing some kind of line-wide
realignment/refresh/reboot this summer. We don't know much about it, other than
what it is called, and what's been rumored. So as is typical for this column
I'm going to engage in some mostly-baseless speculation as to what Rebirth will
entail.
(Note: I'm writing this based on what's
currently known about Rebirth at the time of writing this column; there may be
additional information put out there in between when I submit the column and
when it is published. Then you can all make fun of how wrong I am in the
comments section below!)
From reading between the lines of DC's
April Solicitations, it would appear that May will see the final issues of all
of the regular DCU books (as well as most of the currently running miniseries).
This will coincide with the 52nd issues of the remaining New 52 launch titles
(except for Justice League, which will be on issue 51…) and also with the 12th
issues of most of the remaining DCYou titles (which will give those books two
trade collections worth of issues). Which means that something it happening in
June.
My guess is that we'll see a bunch of
six-issue, twice-monthly miniseries, all subtitled 'Rebirth', that will be
presented as new, accessible versions of DC's characters. This won't be a
reboot as such, but the line will be that these are versions of the characters
that bring together all of the 'best' versions. So they're not throwing away
completely the New 52 versions, or bringing back the pre-Flashpoint versions,
or completely rebooting from scratch again. (If you care about strict
continuity, it'll be a big mess…)
There's also been some rumblings about
aligning the comics more with their movie and/or television counterparts. No,
these new versions won't be direct copies of the other-media versions, but I
wouldn't be surprised to see, for example, Jimmy Olsen as part of the
supporting cast of Supergirl, and Kara either working with the DEO and/or her
origin re-written so that she gains adoptive parents and a sibling and/or
taking on a secret identity and going to work for Cat Grant.
My guess as to what the Rebirth minis
will be?: Batman: Rebirth, Superman: Rebirth, Wonder Woman: Rebirth, Flash:
Rebirth, Green Arrow: Rebirth, Green Lantern: Rebirth, Harley Quinn: Rebirth,
Justice League: Rebirth, Titans: Rebirth, Cyborg: Rebirth, Hawkman: Rebirth,
Robin: Rebirth, Suicide Squad: Rebirth, Supergirl: Rebirth, Swamp Thing:
Rebirth, Legion: Rebirth.
There will likely also be a biweekly (or
even weekly?) series, titled simply Rebirth, running through the three months,
that will provide in some way, shape or form provide an in-continuity reason
for the change. Done in the style of DC's recent weekly books, it will be
plotted by Geoff Johns and written and drawn by a rotating roster of writers
and artists. It will spin out of some big cosmic event in Justice League #52,
which will go on sale the first week of May, providing a nice bookend to the
New 52 (which was kicked-off by Justice League #1 a week before the rest of the
New 52 debuted).
Once the 6-issue Rebirth minis finish in
August, we'll get all new #1 issues for the new ongoing titles in September
(exactly 5 years form the debut of the New 52 in September 2011). We'll get
ongoings for all of the Rebirth minis, plus maybe a couple extra for Batman
& Superman (and maybe a Batman team-up book, Brave and the Bold style?),
and then also Action Comics and Detective Comics (which may instead of launch
with new #1s go back to their original numberings). Action & Detective will
be over-sized books, with lead regular features (featuring Superman and Batman,
respectively), and then rotating second features featuring members of their
respective families, like perhaps Batgirl in Detective.
Expect to see new creative teams on all
of the titles, but likely more in a shuffling-the-deck-chairs sort of way, with
titles switching editors who bring along the people they regularly work with.
Though there's an outside chance that at least one or more creators normally
associated with Marvel will make a jump over to DC for Rebirth. There are
rumors that Marc Silvestri will take over the main Batman title, which would
make sense as they'll need a high-profile creator on Batman with the departure
of Snyder & Capullo (who are rumored to be taking on something else at DC
together--my money would be on either Justice League or Superman).
Anyway, as I said, this is all just
speculation on my part, and I have no inside information whatsoever. So take it
for what it is worth (which is pretty much nil). Feel free to engage in your
own speculation in the comments below.
Warning: The commentary below may contain
reasoned analysis, speculation (unfounded and otherwise), opinion, and/or
snark. Those looking for a more straightforward analysis are directed to John
Jackson Miller's excellent Comichron analysis, posted earlier this month over at Comichron!
Please consider the fine print at the end
of the column. Thanks to Milton Griepp and ICv2.com for the permission to use their figures.
An overview of ICv2.com‘s estimates can be found here.
(Note that the percentage comparisons are
now done with total orders including reorder activity, as opposed to initial
orders as was the practice of this column under the previous administration.)

After a
Marvel-style variant-enhanced first issue, you get a Marvel-style second-issue
massive drop-off.
And the first
issue charts another nearly 9K issues this month; I'm guessing a late-shipping
variant as opposed to there not being enough copies out there.

Well huh.
Who'd've thunk it? Oh wait, once again we get a bunch of retailer incentive
covers on the first issue of a Batman mini-series.
Y'know, sometimes
I wonder why they even bother making up insides for these things; why not just
sell a bunch of collectable covers?

This month,
instead of offering standard issue freely-orderable variants, DC decided to
offer on some of their titles freely-orderable polybagged Harley Quinn
variants, with one of three different versions of the variant cove hidden
inside the polybag. Which as I said back in August's column "…takes all
the fun out of a typical f.o.v. and throws it on the ground and beats it with a
stick until it is a pulp of depression and greed."
So there's good
news/bad news/good news/bad news: The good news, for DC at least, is that those
with the polybagged variants showed a rather sizable increase over their
previous issues sporting regular variants. The bad news is that those comics
which normally sport f.o.v.s but didn't this month saw their sales drop by a
few thousand. The good news on that is that for those titles we finally get a
picture as to the 'normal' sales level sans variants.
The other bad
news is that because this was successful from a sales standpoint, we get the
trick again in March when DC offers polybagged variants on a number of titles,
tying in to the Batman vs. Superman movie. You only have yourselves to blame.

- DARK KNIGHT III: THE MASTER RACE COLLECTORS' EDITION ($12.99)
12/2015:
Dark Knight III Coll #1 of 8 -- 24,005
As with the
Sandman Overture Special Editions, I'm tracking these Collectors' Editions for
DK3 as separate items. (If you disagree, feel free to add the numbers in and do
the math yourself.) These are over-sized editions with paper board covers and
cost over twice as much as the regular editions. 24K for a $13 comic is not
bad.

So sometime in
the past month DC announced that this was always intended to be a limited
series and is ending (with issue #8, I believe). Yeah, right. Believe me, if
this was selling in the 40K range or higher, it would not be ending. Of course,
if a lot of the series here were selling in the 40Ks, there wouldn't be a need
for Rebirth.

The second issue
of Slash & Burn, which doesn't even make the Top 300 chart this month. It
should come as no surprise that this is being cancelled with issue #6.

The Fine Print
(Disclaimers, et cetera)
The numbers above are estimates
for comic-book sales in the North American direct market, as calculated by ICv2.com
according to the chart and index information provided by Diamond Comic
Distributors.
ICv2.com‘s estimates are
somewhat lower than the actual numbers, but they are consistent from month to
month, so the trends they show are fairly accurate. Since it’s a
“month-to-month” column, the comments, unless otherwise noted, are on the most
recent month.
Bear in mind that the figures
measure sales of physical comics to retailers, not customers. Also, these
numbers do not include sales to bookstores, newsstands, other mass-market
retail chains or the United Kingdom. Re-orders are included, so long as they
either reached stores in a book’s initial calendar month of release or were
strong enough to make the chart again in a subsequent month. Keep in mind that
sales for some titles may include incentives to acquire variants and not every
unit sold is necessarily even intended to be sold to a customer.
If additional copies of an issue
did appear on the chart after a book’s initial calendar month of release, you
can see the total number of copies sold in brackets behind those issues (e.g.
“[36,599]“). Should more than one issue have shipped in a month which is
relevant for one of the long-term comparisons, the average between them will be
used.
Titles which are returnable have
their numbers artificially adjusted down by Diamond. To make up for that this
column increases the reported numbers for those titles by 10%. Which is likely
also wrong, but it's a different and likely less wrong kind of wrong, and
experience has shown that this leads to sales figures which are more
consistent.
Titles released under the All-Ages
line and magazines, such as Mad, mostly sell through channels other than
the direct market, so direct-market sales don’t tell us much about their
performance. For most Vertigo titles, collection sales tend to be a significant
factor, so the numbers for those books should be taken with a grain of salt as
well. To learn (a little) more about Vertigo’s collection sales, go right here.
Please keep in mind that raw sales
numbers do not tell us about how profitable a book is for a publisher or for
the creators.
Above all, do not allow sales
numbers to dictate your purchasing and enjoyment of a particular comic. If you
enjoy reading a comic series then go right on buying and reading that comic, no
matter what the sales figures say.
** Two asterisks after a given
month in the average charts mean that one or more periodical release did not
make the Top 300/400 chart in that month. In those cases, it’s assumed that
said releases sold as many units as the No. 300/400 comic on the chart for that
month for the purposes of the chart, although its actual sales are likely to be
less than that.
Opinions expressed in this column
are mine alone, and do not necessarily reflect those of my employer, Heidi
MacDonald or anyone at The Comics Beat, the Pro Golfers' Association, or my
former neighbor's dog Miles.
The author of this column does
weekly snapshots of Amazon comic sales charts at
http://yetanothercomicsblog.blogspot.com/ and tweets about comics and related
subjects on Twitter at @davereadscomics (PM me there is you need to contact

As always, we welcome your
comments and corrections below. Please try to keep things civilized.
