Greetings, sales charts fans! It's time once again to look at DC's sales figures.
DC kicked off its latest round of rebuilding in May with The Man of Steel and Justice League: No Justice. Neither series exactly overwhelmed, but I don’t think that things are quite as grim as some pundits have been spouting. What remains to be seen is how the relaunches of Superman and Justice League fare in the coming months, as well as the soft relaunches of Titans and Teen Titans. We’re likely to see the rollout of several other high profile relaunches in the coming months, including Green Lantern & Wonder Woman. If DC can only get away from flooding the market with low-selling limited series staring c-list characters, they may be able to right their DCU ship.
Also on tap for yet another relaunch is Vertigo, this time with the twin barrels of yet more new series in the traditional Vertigo style, as well as a four-title Sandman Universe. They will be joined by Bendis’s Jinxworld imprint, and the demise of Young Animal.
Straddling the divide will be DC’s Black Label imprint, which hopes to recall the glory days of books like Dark Knight Returns, featuring ‘mature’/edgy non-continuity takes on their classic characters. And then off to the side are DC Ink and DC Zoom, DC’s upcoming imprints for younger-skewing books with their primary sights set outside of the Diamond market.
So hold on, it’s going to be a wild ride!

Doomsday Clock is DC’s top seller for the month, coming in behind Marvel’s Amazing Spider-Man #800 and Venom #1, but ahead of Avengers #1 & Black Panther #1 in a month where Marvel is pulling out all the stops to get retailers to over-order on incentive covers for the launch and anniversary issues. (Which, to be fair, DC often does as well, but not to the extent that Marvel does).
Issue #5 comes in at less than 3000 fewer copies for its first month sales as for those of issue #4, and over the past two months there have been additional orders showing up on the Top 500 for all previous DC issues. So this is doing quite nicely, with the only hitch being that with the now bi-monthly schedule the inevitable hardcover collection won’t be available in time for the 2018 holiday season. (Unless DC decides to divide it up into two separate collections, which IMHO would be a mistake—keeping it as one volume like Watchmen is the way to go here.)

Things are ramping up for Batman ahead of the big wedding scheduled for issue #50. Where things go after that is anyone’s guess, as the book stays at twice-monthly but the cost rises to $3.99. Batman sales likely won’t take much of a hit with the price increase, but down-chart titles may feel the squeeze as readers have to shell out more for their Bat-fix.

9 - MAN OF STEEL ($3.99)

Returnable, so as is standard practice for these charts we have adjusted the sales up 10% from those derived form the Diamond-supplied sales ratios. For why we do this, see the fine print at the end of the column.
When adjusted up that 10% for returnability, sales of Man of Steel #1 come in just barely ahead of DC’s other big mini-series in May, Justice League: No Justice. It is important to realize here that unlike nearly every other top-selling title of the Diamond chart, Man of Steel had no variant covers (which is somewhat ironic, as the original Man of Steel #1 from 1986 was one of the first comics to sport a variant cover that could be ordered by retailers!) And (if I am understanding things correctly, this gets bit complicated...) the returnability was only added shortly before FOC as DC tried to get retailers to raise their orders, and then only those additionally-ordered copies were eligible for returns. So far in June Man of Steel has been showing up on the reorder charts, so there’s all indication Man of Steel is going to do fine, if not spectacular.

Given that the Snyder-led Justice League revamp was coming directly out of Metal, I frankly expected sales to be at least 20K higher than what we get here. So even though these are better sales for Justice League than we’ve seen in a while (excepting for the Metal crossovers, natch), these sales seem somewhat disappointing? I’m not sure that it being a $3.99 weekly series helped anything, especially in a month with many other high-profile launches on the shelf. We’ll see how things go when the relaunch of the regular title comes next month.

Total sales are down this month, mainly because DC had fewer comics on offer (just 74, down from 81 last month). Considering that April included the near-half-million-selling Action #1000, May looks pretty decent. Also recall that these totals don’t include this month’s million-selling promotionally-priced DC Nation #0.

The Fine Print (Disclaimers, et cetera)
The numbers above are estimates for comic-book sales in the North American direct market, as calculated by ICv2.com and Comichron, according to the chart and index information provided by Diamond Comic Distributors.
ICv2.com's and Comichron’s estimates are somewhat lower than the actual numbers, but they are consistent from month to month, so the trends they show are fairly accurate. Since it's a "month-to-month" column, the comments, unless otherwise noted, are on the most recent month.
Bear in mind that the figures measure sales of physical comics to retailers, not customers. Also, these numbers do not include many sales to bookstores, newsstands, libraries, other mass-market retail chains, or the United Kingdom. Re-orders are included, so long as they either reached stores in a book's initial calendar month of release or were strong enough to make the chart again in a subsequent month; or they show up in the year-end Top 1000. Keep in mind that sales for some titles may include incentives to acquire variants and not every unit sold is necessarily even intended to be sold to a customer.
If additional copies of an issue did appear on the chart after a book's initial calendar month of release, you can see the total number of copies sold in brackets behind those issues (e.g. "[36,599]"). Likewise, any lower numbers due to returns or other factors returns will also be reflected in the brackets. Should more than one issue have shipped in a month which is relevant for one of the long-term comparisons, the average between them will be used. Titles which are returnable have their numbers artificially adjusted down by Diamond. To make up for that this column increases the reported numbers for those titles by 10%. Which is likely also wrong, but it's a different and likely less wrong kind of wrong, and experience has shown that this leads to sales figures which are more consistent.
Titles released under the All-Ages line and magazines, such as Mad, mostly sell through channels other than the direct market, so direct-market sales don't tell us much about their performance. Likewise, Digital First comics are published online before print, and may do a significant amount of their sales in that arena. For most Vertigo titles, collection sales tend to be a significant factor, so the numbers for those books should be taken with a grain of salt as well.
Please keep in mind that raw sales numbers do not tell us about how profitable a book is for a publisher or for the creators.
Above all, do not allow sales numbers to dictate your purchasing and enjoyment of a particular comic. If you enjoy reading a comic series then go right on buying and reading that comic, no matter what the sales figures say.
** Two asterisks after a given month in the average charts mean that one or more periodical release did not make the Top 300 chart in that month. In those cases, it's assumed that said releases sold as many units as the No. 300 comic on the chart for that month for the purposes of the chart, although its actual sales are likely to be less than that.
