Commentary:

• Hyperbole and a Half remains in the top slot; it is currently #25 on the overall Amazon books chart.
• Earlier in the week, the Kindle Daily Deal was a selection of eight different Marvel collections. Though the sale has been over for a couple of days, the residual effect is enough that they are all still up near the top of the chart. The knock-on effect is that other items on the chart have slid down lower on than they naturally would have.
• Besides those Marvel collections, the only other debut is the latest issue of The Walking Dead on the Kindle.

Commentary:

• No surprise in seeing Hyperbole and a Half take the top slot again this week. It is currently #30 on the overall books chart.
• Only one new item on the chart this week: the Kindle edition of Jim Butcher's Dresden Files: Ghoul Goblin.
• We now move into the holiday shopping season, so expect the tenor of the chart to change a bit over the next few weeks. We also approach the mid-season finale of The Walking Dead this weekend, which traditionally sees an uptick in Walking Dead collections. Zombies vs. Shoppers!

Commentary:

• The new Walking Dead collection is finally released, but it can't quite break the hold that
  Hyperbole and a Half has on the top slot. H&H is #17 on the overall books chart, while WD is #68. The Kindle edition of the new WD also makes this chart this week.
• The top debut this week, Peanuts Guide to Life, isn't quite a comic, but rather a small (in dimensions) book of quotes and illustrations from Peanuts strips. But I'm including it on the chart because it's close enough.
• Also debuting this week are the 2014 edition of the Argyle Sweater desk calendar; the new Yotsuba&! volume; the original Calvin and Hobbes strip collection; The Fifth Beatle: The Brian Epstein Story; and the latest Attack on Titan.

Commentary:

• With the latest March excitement having settled down, Hyperbole and a Half slides back into the top two places. The paperback is currently #12 on the overall books list.
• The Calvin & Hobbes resurgence continues: Three strip collections make their debut on the Kindle this week and dutifully make their way onto the top sellers chart.
• Last week's Batman Kindle sale is over, and all of those collections that debuted last week are now gone. But the Top Shelf sale sends the Kindle edition of From Hell on to the chart in the #15 place.
• The new Thor movie debuts strong at the box office last weekend, but the best that any Thor comic can do on the chart is the debut of the latest series collection at #42. Still, it's something.
• Also debuting this week are: The Last of Us: American Dreams, the collection of the prequel comic to the video game drawn by Faith Erin Hicks; the new Walking Dead issue in Kindle format; A Rube Goldberg retrospective; and a Dresden Files collection.

• This week's bonus Amazon chart comes to us from Spain! The chart is a mixure of original Spanish comics along with translations from English-, French- and Japanese-language publications.

• A new Blacksad is due in a couple of weeks, and I would guess that it will displace Asterix when it comes out.

Commentary:

• Well that was a surprise.  Seemingly out of nowhere this morning March Book 1 appears at the top of the chart (and is #15 on the overall book chart). Such a jump generally screams media appearance, so I suspect that John Lewis must have been on some program or another yesterday? UPDATE: Apparently March was featured on a segment of The Rachel Maddow Show last night. So there you go.
• Hyperbole and a Half is right behind March: #2 on the comic chart and #16 on the overall chart.
• The other surprise this week is the sudden popularity of the Calvin & Hobbes collection
  Something Under the Bed Is Drooling. It was up to the #2 spot earlier in the week and is currently still in the top ten. I know that there has been something of a C&H renaissance over the past few months; but why this particular collection, and why this week?
• There is presently a sale on Kindle editions of the first volumes of Batman-related New 52 collections; at just over $3 per several of them show up on the chart this week.
• The only non-Kindle debuts this week are manga, the latest volumes of Naruto & Yu-Gi-Oh!

Commentary:

• After last week's look at the comics chart from Amazon.fr, I've decided to make a more-or-less weekly look at comics charts from around the world (for a while, at least...) This week: Italy!
• Italian cartoonist Zerocalcare rules the top of the chart, holding the top three positions and seven of the top fifteen. His Dodeci is also #2 on the overall libri bestsellers chart.
• As in the U.S. this week, the top French import is Blue is the Warmest Color, trumping the new Asterix volume.
• Manga-wise, One Piece dominates the Italian chart. The only other manga on the chart is a volume of Medaka Box way down at the fiftieth position.
• In the realm of American imports, it is mostly modern classics much as Swamp Thing, Blankets, Bone, Strangers in Paradise, and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. A couple of Star Wars volumes make the list (in Kindle editions), and an onmibus of Marvel's Secret Invasion does as well. Joe Kelly's I Kill Giants shows up too, with a variant cover by the aforementioned Zerocalcare.

Commentary:

• Allie Brosh's Hyperbole and a Half rules the chart this week, taking the top three slots with the paperback, Kindle, and hardcover editions. It is currently the #8 book on the overall book chart.
• The new Sandman mini-series, Overture, came out with its first issue this week. As expected the Kindle version charts, and the halo effect also brought other Sandman comics with it, including the bargain-priced first issue of the original series on Kindle, the paperback and Kindle edition of the first collection, and somewhat surprisingly the $90+ first Sandman Omnibus.
• The new Asterix graphic novel may be all the rage in Europe, but after one week on the U.S. chart it disappears. Which means that stateside, Blue Is the Warmest Color is the best-selling Bandes dessinée with both the paperback and Kindle editions making the chart.
• I'm continually amused that in many cases movie trailers seem more likely to drive comic sales than the actual movies themselves. This week a new trailer for X-Men: Days of Future Past was released, and the paperback and Kindle editions of the graphic novel hop up onto the chart.
• Most of the debuts this week (excepting Sandman #1) are in the bottom of the chart, including the new Dilbert day-to-day calendar, mangas No Matter How I Look at It and Attack on Titan 8, and James Patterson's latest Maximum Ride.
• Kindle Watch: Ten Kindle editions make the chart this week, up four from last week.
• Dead Watch: Seven Walking Dead collections make the chart this week, down one from last week.

Commentary

• I had a meeting today with a Faculty member in the French language department who teaches a 200-level class on BDs, which led me to trolling around on Amazon.fr looking for French language comics to add to the library's collection. Seeing as it's Friday when I traditionally compile the Amazon Top 50 comics chart for this blog, I decided to take a look at what is selling in France these days...
• Astérix watch: It should be no surprise that the top seller is the new Astérix volume, Astérix chez les Pictes, which is also #1 on the overall Livres chart as well. All three versions (hardcover, Kindle, and Deluxe) are int eh top 10, and there are eleven Astérix volumes overall in the top 50.
• What may surprise you is that the latest volume of Les Légendaires, number 2 on the BD chart, is #3 overall. In fact, the overall Livres bestsellers chart is full of BDs among other 'regular' books. If you ever needed a demonstration that comics are mainstream in France, here you go!
• The top American comic on the BD chart is a collection of Carl Barks' Donald Duck at #35. Other American comics making the top 50 chart are collections of The Walking Dead, Brightest Day, The Boys, and American Vampire.

• No surprise the Allie Brosh's Hyperbole and a Half remains at the top of the list this week. The hardcover edition jumps up into the top five, and the Kindle edition re-appears on the chart as well.
• Dead Watch: Eight Walking Dead titles on the chart this week. That's down two from last week, but it's also two of the top three, three of the top ten, and five of the top twenty.
• The top debut this week is Asterix and the Picts, the English language translation of what is almost sure to be the biggest selling title world-wide this year. The French langauge edition also debuts on the chart, which is the first time to my knowledge that a French language publication has made the top fifty chart.
• In other translated-from-the-French BD news, Blue Is the Warmest Color returns to the chart this week, and the Kindle edition debuts as well. Demand is no doubt driven by the movie based on it being released. Yeah, that's a NC-17-rated art house flick driving comic sales...
• Also debuting this week are the Webcomic compilation Off the Leash: The Secret Life of Dogs, and the OGN Hellboy: The Midnight Circus.

Commentary:

• Over the past week at least five different titles were in the top position at one point. But at the time that this snapshot was taken, it is Matthew Inman's Why Grizzly Bars... that is sitting in the #1 position. 
• Dead Watch: Four Walking Dead collections in the top 10, and fourteen titles overall on the top fifty chart, including a rare appearance of one of the single issues in Kindle form (#115, which apparently is the 10th anniversary issue). We must be close to the debut of the new television season!
• The top debut this week is the sale-priced Kindle edition of Stephen King's N. Also debuting this week are the 3rd collection of All-New X-Men, the latest Peanuts box set, a hardcover collection of the "Death of the Family" Batman crossover, and the latest Buffy Season 9 collection.
• Kindle Watch: There are nine Kindle editions on the chart this week, down three from last week.

Commentary:

• Allie Brosh's Hyperbole and a Half slips back up into the top slot. It's currently #34 on the overall Amazon book chart. The hardcover and Kindle editions also make appearances on the chart this week. Matthew Inman's Why Grizzly Bears Should Wear Underpants is close behind at #49 on the overall Amazon chart.
• The top debut this week is Your New Job Title Is Accomplice, the Kindle edition of a Dilbert collection, which leads the way in a batch of several sale-priced Kindle editions on the chart this week, including Cat Versus Human; Astonishing X-Men, Vol. 1: Gifted; and Spider-Man: Big Time.
• But the big news this week is the fact that the pre-orders for the Kindle editions of the first two issues of Sandman: Overture debut on the chart this week, despite the first issue not being due out until the end of the month (and the second issue not until December!) If this early interest is any indication, the new Sandman series is going to be huge.
• Manga Watch: There are seven manga volumes on the chart this week, more than we've seen in quite a while, with new volumes of Bleach and Rosario+Vampire joining several volumes of the increasingly popular Attack on Titan.
• Rounding out the new titles this week are the OGN Avengers: Endless Wartime; the second Kindle issue of DC's Forever Evil crossover; and the collection of Charles Burns's Black Hole.
• Dead Watch: Earlier in the week the top two slots on the chart were taken up by Walking Dead collections. But despite their slippage to the #4 & #6 slots as of Friday morning, WD still has three collections in the top ten and five in the top fifteen.
• Kindle Watch: There are twelve kindle editions on the chart this week, up a whopping nine from last week.
