I'm not at SDCC...

Welcome to Comic-Con!I'm unable to go to the San Diego ComicCon, but I'll be following along with Bully the Stuffed Bull as he photo-blogs his way through the con. If you cannot be there as well, I recommend Bully's fun posts as the next best thing to being there.

New This Week Mini Edition: July 23, 2008

I'm still on a semi-break from blogging, but I couldn't let this new comics day go by without mentioning:

The American Flagg hardcover finally comes out (how many years late is it?)

Marvel Adventures Super-Heroes #1, the new Paul Tobin-written comic in the MA line. Hulk, Spider-Man & Iron Man: what more do you want from your super-hero comics?

Ambush Bug: Year None #1, the highly-anticipated return of Keith Giffen & Robert Loren Fleming's DCU skewering.

Uncanny X-Men #500, the big round anniversary issue sees Matt Fraction joining his Iron Fist writing partner Ed Brubaker on Marvel's Merry Mutants.

Girl Genius Volume 7, 'nuff said.

And if it didn't arrive at your friendly local comic store last week, the sizable Zot! Complete Black & White Stories collection should arrive.

Shameless Friend Promotion: Jim O @ ComicCon

Pal Jim Ottaviani sends along the following:
Hello all,

I will be a guest of the Comic-Con this year, which is a wonderful honor. That means that I won't be in the Independent Publishers area (where I've been for the last 8 years or so). Please do visit me in this year's special location:
Artist's Alley, AA-13

I'm also on two panels this time around, the first of which is sure to be interesting!
Saturday, 4:30-5:30, Room 4
The Story of an Image

Here's Tom Spurgeon's summary of this: "Killer guest list including [Kim] Deitch and [Jim] Woodring. Also, you can ask Jim Ottaviani, 'Why are you up there with the rest of those giants, Jim?' And he'll totally agree with you." (It's true -- Tom and I had that conversation in Charlotte. I'm baffled and flattered and expect to learn a lot from my betters!)

Sunday, 10:30-11:30, Room 3
Spotlight on Jim Ottaviani

Just as it says. We'll talk about some things I want to talk about, and then talk about some things you want to talk about!

That's it. Safe travels to all who will be at the show -- I look forward to seeing you there. As always, I'll have books to sell, including a limited edition hard cover of the Charles R. Knight autobiography, posters to give away, and a smile on my face and a song in my heart...or something like that.

Special bonus, to those who got this far: If you have a friend who wants to attend the show on Saturday but didn't pre-register, find me before closing time on Friday and I can help you out. First come, first served!

Finally, and as always, if you'd like me to remove you from this list, please reply and I'll take your email address off right away.

Thanks!

Jim

"All of this has happened before..."

Via Nintendo Wii News, here's Sony CEO Howard Stringer in an interview with Bloomberg comparing his company's PlayStation 3 to the Nintendo Wii:
"I've played a Nintendo Wii. I don't see it as a competitor," Stringer said dismissively. "It's more of an expensive niche game device. We're selling a lot of PlayStation 3s now and it's still the best way to buy a Blu-ray player."

As Don Kaufman points out, the Wii is cheaper than the PS3, and neither is it a niche system.

I for one am reminded of attitudes expressed by certain comics companies regarding manga a few years ago...

Blogging About Not Blogging is Still a Sin

I'll still be in stealth mode for a bit longer, I'm afraid, though you might see a simple post pop up from time to time. In the meantime, please enjoy the resumption of quick comic reviews in my Twitter feed.
