Items with asterisks (*) are pre-order items.
Items with dollar signs ($) were part of a deeply discounted Kindle sale this week
N = New listing appearing on list for first time
R = Item returning to the list after having been off for 1 or more weeks

Commentary:

  • Another week, another new #1; this week it is the first Deluxe hardcover edition of Berserk  which was finally released this week after floating around on the chart in pre-order for what seems like forever. The next two volumes (still in pre-order) return to the chart in the 13th and 14th positions.
  • The celebration info Batman's 80th anniversary kicked off this week with the release of Detective Comics #1000  the Kindle edition debuts on the chart, joining the pre-order for the hardcover edition and the 80 Years of Batman compilation.
  • The top debut this week is the Kindle edition of The Life of Captain Marvel. Also debuting this week are The Handmaid's Tale: The Graphic Novel, the pre-order for the Doomsday Clock collection (due out in November), a new Batman collection, and pre-orders for new volumes of My Hero Academia: Vigilantes and The Promised Neverland.
  • Speaking of The Promised Neverland, a bunch of the volumes return to the chart en masse this week, possibly because the first season of the Anime series just finished airing.
  • A word about the way this chart is compiled: this week I clarified the opening to state that comiXology Unlimited titles are removed from the chart. Most of those are also Kindle Unlimited titles, but apparently there are a few that are on cXU and not KU.

DC Comics Month-to-Month Sales: February 2019 - The Price of Laughter

The Batman Who Laughs #3
Greetings, sales charts fans! It's time once again to look at DC's sales figures.

As mentioned in last month’s column, DC are purposely reducing the number of individual comics they publish each month. And since December and January were odd months due to the holiday publishing schedule, February is the first month that we get a good look at what their typical publishing output may be going forward. With just 59 new comics titles in, February is the lowest monthly output for a regular four-shipping-week month that they’ve had in at least sixteen years, and likely much longer (but the stats I have on hand only go back to March 2003).

The anticipation is that eventually this will lead to better average sales per title. Has that happened? Not quite yet, as there’s still a lot of cruft left in the bottom of the chart, with too many title selling below the 10K mark. Most of those are scheduled the end in the next few months, and as long as DC doesn’t try to replace those with more low-selling series that oughta improve their sales average.

(How can they tell if a series will be low-selling? Not making more mini-series starring d-list characters would be a good start, as would not launch big new sublines featuring entirely new characters in many titles over a few short months.)

March will see the start of the second part of DC’s refocussing on their output: their DC Ink and DC Zoom line of kid- and YA-focused OGNs; but we’ll wait until next month’s column before diving in to that.

Warning: The commentary below may contain reasoned analysis, speculation (unfounded and otherwise), opinion, and/or snark. Those looking for a more straightforward analysis are directed to John Jackson Miller's excellent Comichron analysis, posted earlier this month over at Comichron!

Please consider the fine print at the end of the column, as it explains several things about how these charts are compiled.

(Note that the percentage comparisons are done with total orders including reorder activity.)

1 - THE BATMAN WHO LAUGHS ($4.99)
12/2018: Batman Who Laughs #1 of 6 -- 220,055           [242,238]
01/2019: Batman Who Laughs #2 of 6 -- 116,827 (- 50.1%) [117,994]
02/2019: Batman Who Laughs #3 of 6 -- 101,771 (- 13.7%)

An expected third issue percentage drop. Despite its strong sales, The Batman Who Laughs is not immune to the Law of Standard Attrition. The first issue gets another 8K in reorders, and the second issues gets about 1K.

Batman gets a bump this month, due to a Heroes in Crisis tie-in crossover with The Flash, “The Price.” But unlike “The Button” from a couple of years ago it’s not a huge bump, due to several factors: HiC isn’t a huge blockbuster, these are fill-in issues, and there are no lenticular covers.

5 - HEROES IN CRISIS ($3.99)
09/2018: Heroes in Crisis #1 of 9 -- 140,699           [152,785]
10/2018: Heroes in Crisis #2 of 9 --  88,547 (- 36.0%)  [97,826]
11/2018: Heroes in Crisis #3 of 9 --  83,794 (- 10.2%)  [87,828]
12/2018: --
01/2019: Heroes in Crisis #4 of 9 --  82,151 (-  4.9%)  [83,539]
01/2019: Heroes in Crisis #5 of 9 --  79,087 (-  3.2%)  [80,850]
02/2019: Heroes in Crisis #6 of 9 --  79,006 (-  2.3%)

Settling in, with first month sales nearly identical to the previous issue. There’s nothing wrong with a comic selling 80K—in fact, DC needs more of those—but these are disappointing sales for what was billed as a Big Event Series. DC will be doubling down on this grim-dark, anti-Rebirth version of the DCU with their upcoming Year of the Villain.

The other half of “The Price,” the Heroes in Crisis tie-in crossover with Batman. As is typical, the lower-selling of the titles involved in the crossover gets the bigger boost.

Big sales bump this month; not because more people are suddenly interested in reading Wonder Woman, but because both issues have Artgerm variants.

Like Superman, Action also has a small drop (and no Liefeld cover). So maybe both titles are leveling out?

34 - SHAZAM! ($3.99)
12/2018: Shazam! #1  -- 66,950           [69,670]
01/2018: Shazam! #2  -- 43,607 (- 35.6%) [44,892]
02/2018: Shazam! #3  -- 37,905 (- 15.6%)

An expected third issue drop. Will the upcoming movie help sales at all? Past experience on these things says no...

40 - YOUNG JUSTICE ($3.99)

02/2019: Young Justice #2  -- 37,081 (- 51.6%)

That’s a pretty large percentage drop for a second issue, though the first was propped up by number variant covers (seven variants, versus just one variant for issue #2). The first issue also gets a second printing.

Coming in at #85 on the Diamond-NA chart this month is the Man and Superman 100 Page Super Spectacular, a story originally created for the Superman Confidential series which had apparently been sitting in the bottom of a drawer for the past several year. Its sales of 19,782 are pretty good for a $10 comic, enough so that DC are planning on releasing a hardcover deluxe edition of the comic in a few months.

09/2018: Dreaming #1  -- 37,258           [38,029]
10/2018: Dreaming #2  -- 21,559 (- 43.3%)

01/2018: Dreaming #5  -- 17,054 (-  6.2%)
02/2018: Dreaming #6  -- 15,989 (-  6.2%)

The top-selling of the Sandman Universe titles. None are exactly lighting up the charts, but The Dreaming at least is holding its own compared to just about any other recent Vertigo series. DC is no doubt counting on sizable trade collection sales on these as well.

113 - NAOMI ($3.99)
01/2019: Naomi #1 -- 27,777           [31,441]
02/2019: Naomi #2 -- 15,838 (- 49.6%)

A biggish drop on a title that did not have a lot of wriggle room. Even with re-orders on the first issue, this has already been cancelled after issue #6. (And no, unlike two of the other Wonder Comics books, this was not announced as a limited series.)

115 - OLD LADY HARLEY ($3.99)
10/2018: Old Lady Harley #1 of 5 -- 36,520           [37,148]

02/2019: Old Lady Harley #5 of 5 -- 15,580 (+  0.6%)

Final issue of the mini-series, whose sales show that it is a much different market for HQ books than it was back in 2016. Did releasing so much Harley Quinn content over the past few years deaden the market, or were DC just striking while the iron was hot to milk out all the sales that they could while Harley was hot?

Settling in quickly, which is good because it’s a long way to go to issue #12...

The Fine Print (Disclaimers, et cetera)

The numbers above are estimates for comic-book sales in the North American direct market, as calculated by ICv2.com and Comichron, according to the chart and index information provided by Diamond Comic Distributors.

ICv2.com's and Comichron’s estimates are somewhat lower than the actual numbers, but they are consistent from month to month, so the trends they show are fairly accurate. Since it's a "month-to-month" column, the comments, unless otherwise noted, are on the most recent month.

Bear in mind that the figures measure sales of physical comics to retailers, not customers. Also, these numbers do not include many sales to bookstores, newsstands, libraries, other mass-market retail chains, or the United Kingdom. Re-orders are included, so long as they either reached stores in a book's initial calendar month of release or were strong enough to make the chart again in a subsequent month; or they show up in the year-end Top 1000. Keep in mind that sales for some titles may include incentives to acquire variants and not every unit sold is necessarily even intended to be sold to a customer.

If additional copies of an issue did appear on the chart after a book's initial calendar month of release, you can see the total number of copies sold in brackets behind those issues (e.g. "[36,599]"). Likewise, any lower numbers due to returns or other factors returns will also be reflected in the brackets. Should more than one issue have shipped in a month which is relevant for one of the long-term comparisons, the average between them will be used. Titles which are returnable have their numbers artificially adjusted down by Diamond. To make up for that this column increases the reported numbers for those titles by 10%. Which is likely also wrong, but it's a different and likely less wrong kind of wrong, and experience has shown that this leads to sales figures which are more consistent.

Titles released under the All-Ages line and magazines, such as Mad, mostly sell through channels other than the direct market, so direct-market sales don't tell us much about their performance. Likewise, Digital First comics are published online before print, and may do a significant amount of their sales in that arena. For most Vertigo titles, collection sales tend to be a significant factor, so the numbers for those books should be taken with a grain of salt as well.

Please keep in mind that raw sales numbers do not tell us about how profitable a book is for a publisher or for the creators.

Above all, do not allow sales numbers to dictate your purchasing and enjoyment of a particular comic. If you enjoy reading a comic series then go right on buying and reading that comic, no matter what the sales figures say.

** Two asterisks after a given month in the average charts mean that one or more periodical release did not make the Top 300 chart in that month. In those cases, it's assumed that said releases sold as many units as the No. 300 comic on the chart for that month for the purposes of the chart, although its actual sales are likely to be less than that.

Opinions expressed in this column are mine alone, and do not necessarily reflect those of my employer; The International Association for Food Protection; or my former neighbor's dog Miles.
