Yet Another Friday Question - Your First Comic Purchase

Marvel Special Edition featuring Star Wars< #1What was the first comic book you ever purchased?

For me it was Marvel Special Edition featuring Star Wars #1, a tabloid-sized collection of the first three issues of Marvel's Star Wars adaptation--the first half of the movie. I only had this first half, so I read and re-read the first half of Star Wars over and over. This of course was way back in the day before home video, so comic book adaptaions were one of the very few ways to relive a movie experience.

How about you--what was the first comic you bought?

The first comic book I ever purchased was a copy of "DuckTales #6" from the defunct Disney Comics line. The poor thing no longer has a cover.

Another vote for Star Wars -- #58 of the Marvel series, to be exact. I know I'd read some comics before that, but that's the one that "launched" the collecting bug that plagues me to this day.

Daredevil #190 by Frank Miller. It's the episode when DD tries to resurrect Elektra. I was probably 7 years old at the time and my uncle picked it up at the airport when he was visiting us. The story was hard for me to understand, but I was intrigued by the ninjas and the idea of a blind hero.

The concept stuck with me, and when I began collecting comics on my own later, I gravitated toward Daredevil. He's still my favorite hero.

You want me to remember something I bought uh, 46 or so years ago?

I'd already had comics before I bought any. My early comics were bought for me by my parents and the dentist let me take some of the older ones from his waiting room. My early comics included a 1957 Batman (which got lost when we moved in 1969), Classics Illustrated, Katy Keene, Archies, Romance comics, Linda Carter Student Nurse, and Batman and Superman titles. I had one old issue of Fantastic Four, too. Then came Lois Lane and a lot of others.

But I can't remember the first one I bought. I can't remember not having comics!

Silver Surfer. I worked in a sports/surf shop in the mall in high school, and we sold it on the counter. I was into all things surfing then. I still have a special place for Silver Surfer in my heart, although I don't follow it now.

If I remember correctly...

...the first comic book proper I ever purchased wasn't for myself. This was before I ever even considered comic books as a hobby (and at the moment, I'm having vague second thoughts about comic books as a hobby, which is par for my course). The first comic book I ever bought was an issue (don't ask which) of The Simpsons, in French, as a souvenir for my brother (a Simpsons, not a comic book, fan) while I was in France during a high school trip.

The first comic I remember owning was Jack Kirby's Devil Dinosaur #1, which I think came out in 1978, so I would have been 4 years old.

The comic that started me collecting comics was Tales of the Jedi #1 which came out in about 1993 ...
