Commentary:

• Back on top this week is the first Walking Dead Compendium, sitting comfortably at #37 on the overall Amazon book chart. It spent most of the week jockeying with the first volume of Avatar: The Search for the #1 position on the comics chart.
• Coming out of nearly nowhere into the #2 slot as the top debut of the week is a new The Oatmeal book from Matthew Inman, My Dog: The Paradox. As a pre-order it is already #47 on the overall Amazon book chart.
• Injustice Watch: The eleventh issue of Injustice: Gods Among Us debuts in the top ten, but only four of the issues make the comics chart this week, whereas last week all ten issues made the chart.
• Also debuting this week are the tenth Sailor Moon volume, and a discounted Kindle version of the first Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi collection.
• Poor Hawkguy still can't crack the top ten; for the third week in a row, Hawkeye, Vol. 1: My Life as a Weapon sits at the #11 position on the chart. Still, that's the most sustained interest that a Marvel collection has seen in quite some time.
• Dead Watch: There are nine Walking Dead collections on the chart this week, including two of the top three positions. The season finale is this Sunday, so we'll see if there's a Walking Dead surge in its wake like there was last year...
• Diary Watch: The Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Dork Diaries franchises between them take up fourteen of the slots on the chart this week, down three from last week. 
• Kindle Watch: Seventeen of the chart positions this week are taken up by Kindle editions, down seven from last week. The decline is mainly due to the decline in the number of Injustice issues making the chart.

• Note: This week's chart positions are taken from Saturday morning instead of the usual Friday posting, so take all numbers and comparisons with an extra grain of salt...
• The Kindle edition of the seventh Wimpy Kid returns to the top of the chart this week, pushing The Walking Dead Compendia back down to positions 2 and 4.
• A big surge this week for the first volume of the new Avatar: The Last Airbender series, leaping up 38 places to the #3 slot (corresponding to the #49 position on the overall Amazon chart). Pre-orders for the second debut at #30.
• Injustice Watch: Led by the top ten debut of the tenth issue, all ten digital issues of Injustice: Gods Among Us make the top fifth chart this week.
• Also debuting this week are both volumes of Nathan Edmondson & Mitch Gerads' The Activity; and some kind of Mobile Suit Gundam graphic novel.
• Dead Watch: Just eight Walking Dead collections make the top fifty this week, down two from last week. Once again there are several collections hovering down in what would be the chart positions in the fifties, indicating that the appearance of the Injustice comics this year are keeping TWD from placing many more collections on the top fifty chart like they did last year when the television show was airing. The season finale is a week from Sunday, and we'll see then if the comic collections get their traditional end-of-season boost this year...
• Diary Watch: The Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Dork Diaries franchises, which between them take up seventeen of the slots on the chart this week, the same as last week.

• The first Walking Dead Compendium remains at #1 on the comics chart this week and is ranked #35 on the overall chart. 
• Injustice Watch: Led by the top ten debut of the ninth issue, all nine digital issues of Injustice: Gods Among Us make the top fifty chart this week.
• Dead Watch: The property most hurt by the Injustice surge is The Walking Dead; while it has two of the top three slots, it holds only ten slots overall, down six from last week. There are several WD collections knocking at the cellar door in the sub-50 positions on the chart; the Injustice issues having pushed them barely off of the top fifty chart.
• Diary Watch:  Not really hurt by the Injustice surge are the Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Dork Diaries franchises, which between them take up seventeen of the slots on the chart this week, the same as last week.
• Marvel place three titles on the chart: Hawkeye surging up to #11, and the debuts of Kick-Ass 2 Prelude: Hit-Girl and Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe. Two of these aren't even set in the Marvel Universe (and Hawkeye is rather atypical for a MU book), which maybe speaks to where Marvel should be concentrating its bookstore efforts...

• Hey look, a new Number One! Well, new-ish; the first Walking Dead Compendium has been at #1 before, but it returns to that spot after The Wimpy Kid 7 has held it for many weeks. It's currently #37 on the overall Amazon books chart.
• The top debut this week is the pre-order of Vader's Little Princess, Jeffrey Brown's follow-up to his surprise hit Darth Vader and Son.
• Other debuts this week are the latest issue of Injustice; and the first collection of Fraction and Aja's Hawkeye. I can't tell you how happy it makes me to see Hawkguy make the chart!

Commentary:

• The Kindle edition of The Wimpy Kid 7 retains the #1 slot yet again this week. Can anything dethrone the Kid?
• Dead Watch: The two Walking Dead Compendia remain in the #2 & #3 slots, though they slip to #45 & #67 respectively on the overall Amazon books chart. There are thirteen WD collections on the chart this week, down one from last week
• Injustice Watch: The seventh issue of Injustice: Gods Among Us is the top debut this week; #1 and #6 are the only other issues that make the chart this week. At this point it appears that there is a core readership that is coming to the Kindle every week for their fix, and also a steady stream of new readers trying the series for the first time. Issue #7 is also the top seller on comiXology right now, beating out even the heavily-promoted Batman Incorporated #8. Like it or not, this is currently the best-selling super-hero comic outside of the direct market.
• Also debuting this week are Nemo: Heart of Ice (the latest League of Extraordinary Gentlemen comic) and a Kindle collection of FoxTrot comic strips.

• The Kindle edition of The Wimpy Kid 7 retains the #1 slot yet again this week. Though for a while earlier in the week the first Walking Dead Compendium briefly appeared in the top spot.
• Dead Watch: The two Walking Dead Compendia remain in the #2 & #3 slots, and have moved up to #31 & #44 respectively on the overall Amazon books chart. There are fourteen WD collections on the chart this week, up five from last week, and three collections in the top ten.
• The first Saga collection climbs up the chart to #11, due to its being significantly discounted (which is rare on Amazon for a sub-$10 book).
• Injustice Watch: The sixth issue of Injustice: Gods Among Us is the lone debut this week; #1 and #5 are the only other issues that make the chart this week.
• Kindle Watch: Twenty of the chart slots this week are taken up by Kindle editions, down one from last week.

Commentary:

• The Kindle version of Wimpy Kid 7 remains in the top slot this week, but the hardcover slips down to #3 as How to Tell if Your Cat... slips back up into the #2 position. 
• The second volume of the New 52 Justice League is the top debut this week, making it the first of the vol. 2s of the DCnU to take it on the chart.
• Two more issues of the now-infamous digital-first series Injustice: Gods Among Us make onto the chart, joining two others that debuted last week. Subject matter aside, this points a way towards releasing future video game-related comics as digital-first rather than as print comics in the future.
• Also debuting this week are the romance-themed cartoon book Me Without You; another Naruto volume; and the pre-order for the first volume of the new Avatar series. Expect the latter to climb up the charts and break into the top ten at some point.
• Kindle Watch: Amazon's popular Kindle electronic format takes up nineteen of the slots on this week's chart, which is down one from last week.
• Diary Watch: The Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Dork Diaries franchises between them take up nineteen of the slots on the chart this week, down one from last week.  
• Dead Watch: There are only four Walking Dead collections on the chart this week, but the two Compendia are sitting comfortably in the ##5 & #6 slots. The television series resumes this weekend, which should push a few more volumes up onto the chart for the next couple of months...

Stats Week: DCnU Title Longevity

Here's a table/chart showing the longevity of each of the titles in DC's New 52 and how long they've lasted:

Number is the issue number published during that month (cover dates are given, not on-sale dates). They are grouped by 'wave.' You'll note in the totals that for most months they did indeed publish 52 comics as part of the DCnU, except for Sep 2012 when Batman Incorporated skipped a month due to thematic sensitivity due to the theater shootings; Nov 2012 during Zero Month when they published #0 issues for three cancelled series; and the upcoming Apr 2013, apparently because the new Constantine series won't be ready to launch in time.

Stats Week: 2012 - A Year of Reading Comics

It's Day 2 of our annual Stats Week here ay YACB!

Here's a chart showing how many comics I acquired each week, and how many I read each day of 2012:

My comics week starts on Thursday, as that's when the weekly DCBS shipment usually arrives. Each individual item counts as a comic, whether it be a 22 page floppy or a 600+ page graphic novel opus. The 'Roll' column represents the total delta from when I started keeping track (Feb 2009).

This year for the first time I counted digital comics in the count in addition to physical comics. As a result I both bought and read more comics this year than ever before. (I mostly blame comiXology's 99¢ sales...) I managed to read exactly one more comic this year than I acquired.

Methodology: I took my weekly (compiled on Friday) lists of Amazon Top 50 Comics & Graphic Novels, and for each week assigned a comic a numerical score equal to 51 minus its ranking; e.g. the #1 book got 50 points, the #2 book got 49 points, the #3 book got 48 points, etc., all the way down to the #50 book getting 1 point. I poured everything into a spreadsheet, and voila. You can download a spreadsheet with all of the data here.

Commentary:

• Once again the book that was at #1 on the first week of the year ends up as the #1 book for the whole year, as it has been since I began these charts. And once again it is a Diary of a Wimpy Kid volume. That bodes well for the seventh Wimpy Kid volume for 2013...
• There were 275 different comics that made the Top 50 for at least one week during 2012; that's down from 324 in 2011.
• It was a good year on the Amazon chart for Diary comics (both Wimpy Kids and Dorks), The Walking Dead, and Batman.
• I never thought I'd see the day that a book by Jeffrey Brown was a top ten seller. But it turns out that Darth Vader and Son was a perfect match for him. There's a sequel, Vader's Little Princess, due out this coming April.
• Eleven of the Top Fifty are Kindle editions this year. That's up from just three last year, and looking at the charts for January I will not be surprised if that number goes up again for 2013. A lot.
• Four books made the chart all fifty-two weeks of the year: Wimpy Kid 6, Walking Dead Compendium 1, Wimpy Kid 5, and Batman: The Killing Joke.
• The only DC New 52 collection to make the Top 50 for the year is Batman. In all, eleven of the New 52 collections made an appearance on the chart throughout the year, though four of those only for one week. The others were: Justice League (#72), Action Comics (#146), Animal Man (#149), Detective Comics (#156), Batman and Robin (#161), Aquaman (#198), Batman: The Dark Knight (#220), Green Lantern (#227), Catwoman (#247), Swamp Thing (#256).
• Marvel continued their woes on the Amazon Charts this year: Their top rated book, Avengers vs. X-Men, placed at #89. This despite the fact that The Avengers was the #1 movie of the year  and media tie-ins tend to give boosts to other comics properties, as witnessed by the boosts given to Batman and The Walking Dead.

• Diary Watch: The Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Dork Diaries franchises between them take up nineteen of the slots on the chart this week, up one from last week. 
• Kindle Watch: Amazon's popular Kindle electronic format takes up seventeen of the slots on this week's chart, which is down three from last week.
