DC Comics Month-to-Month Sales: January 2019 - When You Were Young
Greetings, sales charts fans! It's time once again to look at DC's sales figures.
A few things to note before we get started this month:
First, while this column is late, this time it is not my fault! For some reason Diamond-NA released the January Top 500 two weeks later than usual. So this is still going up within the two-week window that I generally strive for.
Second, you may recall that December was a very light month in terms of number of comics released for DC, as they delayed what would have been their fourth week December releases to the first week of January instead. That means that January has a larger than usual output. Kind of...
We’ve occasionally made note over the past few months that DC appears to be cutting back some on their output, and that was verified by the DC brass recently, as they are cutting back some on individual comics to put more focus on their upcoming DC Ink and & DC Zoom line of YA and mid-grade OGNs, and also larger anthology titles mixing new stories with reprints. To me this makes sense, as there is only so much DC content that the market can handle, as seen by the poor sales at the bottom of the DCU segment—exemplified by the failure of the New Age of Heroes initiative. So hopefully fewer mini- and maxi-series starring C- and D-list properties, and fewer twice-monthly titles, will get their per-title average up.
So basically DC moving their fourth week December titles to January means that January 2019’s release volume is on par with their release schedule from a year ago, but makes it an outlier based on the last few months and likely going forward as well.

On the one hand a 50% drop for a second issue is fairly large. But on the other hand that still leaves this as DC’s only book about 100K, and there were 14K reorders of the first issue. And there was only one variant cover, not the many exclusives as there were for the first issue. So things are going just fine here.
The Batman Who Laughs #2 also outsold all of Marvel’s #1 issues this monthly, including the launches of new Captain Marvel, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Conan the Barbarian series (which were nos. 2, 3 & 4, respectively).

Those numbers for #63 are not encouraging. Issue #62 had a Frank Miller variant which may have propped its numbers up a bit. But unless there are a lot of re-orders next month for issue #63, it will be the first time that Batman has dipped below 90K since before the New 52 era. It’s weird to say that DC’s best-selling (by far) regular title is in sales trouble, but it kind of is...
Next month sees a Heroes in Crisis tie-in crossover with The Flash. Which may improve things for a month, or (as they are fill-in issues, and HiC isn’t exactly setting the sales chart on fire) exacerbate things further.

Speaking of Heroes in Crisis, we get two issues this month as it was one of the titles that shifted it’s regular fourth week date from December into the first week of January.
Again, it may seem odd to criticize the sales of a top ten title, but this is not what one would expect for a big DCU event series that is meant to change everything. I chalk it up to the whole theme and plot of the book betraying pretty much everything that DC initiated with Rebirth.

By shifting what would have been week four of December into the first week of January, DC bumped their total titles released this month up to 86 and got their total sales up to a respectable 2.3M. But as many of those titles that doubled-up were in the lower section of the sales chart, that really damaged the average sales, especially without top sellers like Doomsday Clock or Batman Damned.

The Fine Print (Disclaimers, et cetera)
The numbers above are estimates for comic-book sales in the North American direct market, as calculated by ICv2.com and Comichron, according to the chart and index information provided by Diamond Comic Distributors.
ICv2.com's and Comichron’s estimates are somewhat lower than the actual numbers, but they are consistent from month to month, so the trends they show are fairly accurate. Since it's a "month-to-month" column, the comments, unless otherwise noted, are on the most recent month.
Bear in mind that the figures measure sales of physical comics to retailers, not customers. Also, these numbers do not include many sales to bookstores, newsstands, libraries, other mass-market retail chains, or the United Kingdom. Re-orders are included, so long as they either reached stores in a book's initial calendar month of release or were strong enough to make the chart again in a subsequent month; or they show up in the year-end Top 1000. Keep in mind that sales for some titles may include incentives to acquire variants and not every unit sold is necessarily even intended to be sold to a customer.
If additional copies of an issue did appear on the chart after a book's initial calendar month of release, you can see the total number of copies sold in brackets behind those issues (e.g. "[36,599]"). Likewise, any lower numbers due to returns or other factors returns will also be reflected in the brackets. Should more than one issue have shipped in a month which is relevant for one of the long-term comparisons, the average between them will be used. Titles which are returnable have their numbers artificially adjusted down by Diamond. To make up for that this column increases the reported numbers for those titles by 10%. Which is likely also wrong, but it's a different and likely less wrong kind of wrong, and experience has shown that this leads to sales figures which are more consistent.
Titles released under the All-Ages line and magazines, such as Mad, mostly sell through channels other than the direct market, so direct-market sales don't tell us much about their performance. Likewise, Digital First comics are published online before print, and may do a significant amount of their sales in that arena. For most Vertigo titles, collection sales tend to be a significant factor, so the numbers for those books should be taken with a grain of salt as well.
Please keep in mind that raw sales numbers do not tell us about how profitable a book is for a publisher or for the creators.
Above all, do not allow sales numbers to dictate your purchasing and enjoyment of a particular comic. If you enjoy reading a comic series then go right on buying and reading that comic, no matter what the sales figures say.
** Two asterisks after a given month in the average charts mean that one or more periodical release did not make the Top 300 chart in that month. In those cases, it's assumed that said releases sold as many units as the No. 300 comic on the chart for that month for the purposes of the chart, although its actual sales are likely to be less than that.
