Like Living on Earth 2

Everything seems just slightly wrong this week. Mainly this is due to my computer being in the shop, getting the motherboard replaced (the ethernet connection went bad and wasn't working when I got back Monday evening). I've got the iBook from work here at home, hooked up to my monitor and keyboard, but it's just not the same as my computer with my files and my iTunes etc. I may get it back tomorrow if the parts arrive, otherwise it'll be all weekend without my G4.

Plus, this is a Thursday comics week, so Wednesday came and went without any new comics. I stopped by my LCS today and got the new batch, but now since my computer is in the shop I can't enter the comics into my database and file them into the To Be Read Box (remember, I'm an anal-retentive librarian!) like normal.

At work, it's the start of the new semester, and we've decided to reconfigure the reference desk schedule so all of the reference shifts are at odd times. It all just feels wrong.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go read The Daily Star.

Do you use your own database or one of the pre-packaged CD-Rom deals? I'm still trying to decide how to organize my comics...

That's actually a really long story... I use my own FileMaker databases, but these days only keep track of raw title counts; four years ago my main comics database crashed and took with it about 6 months worth of data. I didn't re-enter right away, and now it's been four years since I've updated it (!)

I want to create an all new database, once I get around to getting FileMaker 7 so I can make it all relational and stuff. I'll probably need to re-enter large chunks of data depending on how well I can import from the old database. I'll probably use the opportunity to purge my collection while I'm going through it. (I have nearly 25,000 comics, and I'd like to divest myself of about 10,000 of those...)

There are no commercial comics databases for OS X that I know of (although Collectorz.com claims that there will be an OS X version of Comic Collector in Q4 2004). But still, I'll probably end up creating my own since I'm too particular about what I'd want in a database.

One of the other librarians had to phone me at my desk today to come out to man the reference desk. I totally flaked out, and hadn't internalized the new schedule for the reference desk. It happens every fall :)

Thankfully, I just go wherever MeetingMaker tells me to go--So long as I check it, I'm okay. Of course, on occasion I've shown up at a meeting with no real idea of what it's supposed to be about, other than MeetingMaker said to be there...

I see Dave. Yeah, I'll probably jsut work up my own database--much easier to control how to cross-reference things the way I'd prefer.

And sheesh...you librarians are a weird lot... ;)

Got my computer back today. Yay! The casmic barrier has been realigned properly and I'm now back on Earth 1. Only a couple of annoyances, mainly due to the fact that it's a whole new motherboard so that's just like it being a different computer as far as software is concerned. So I have to re-apply serial numbers and the like, which is a pain. plus, I had to authorize this motherboard for my iTunes account, and there's no way I can see to deauthorize the old motherboard, so I'm down to 4 authorizations instead of 5 :(

urgh...that is a pain having to re-install software, especially when you con't have those serial numbers handy...
