New This Week: May 24, 2006

Buckaroo Bonzai #1Based on the NCRL list for this week's comics shipping from Diamond, here are a few things to look for at the local comic shop tomorrow:

The Pick of the Week is Moonstone's Buckaroo Bonzai #1, bringing one of my favorite films ever to the comic page. Please please please please let it be good...

In other comics:

A-V/Win-Mill have a new Following Cerebus (#8).

Abstract have a new Strangers in Paradise (#82).

AD Vision have a new volume of Cromartie High School (v. 6).

Antarctic habe a new issue of Ninja High School (#138), the debut of the Gold Digger: Throne of Shadows mini, and a new Gold Digger Pocket Manga (v. 8).

Dark Horse have a collection of Concrete: Think Like a Mountain. This is the one where Concrete gets involved with an eco-terrorist group; I recall at the time that, while it was as well done as all Concrete series are, I wasn't sure if I liked it or not. I think it bears re-reading...

DC have the second post-re-reboot collection for Legion of Super-Heroes; the debut of Gail Simone's Secret Six mini; and new issues of 52 (week 3), American Way (#4), Birds of Prey (#94), Blue Beetle (#3), Catwoman (#55), Checkmate (#2), Hawkgirl (#52), Hellblazer (#220), JSA Classified (#12), Supergirl & the Legion (#18), and Testament (#6).

Fantagraphics have a new issue of The Comics Journal (#276).

IDW have the third bout of Spike vs. Dracula.

Lobrau have the second issue of Toupydoops.

Marvel collect the Black Widow: The Things They Say About Her mini; and have new issues of Avengers & Power Pack (#2), Daredevil (#85), Nextwave (#5), Powers (#18), She-Hulk 2 (#8), Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane (#6), Squadron Supreme (#3), X-Factor (#7), and X-Statix Presents Dead Girl (#5).

Oni have the third Scott Pilgrim volume: Scott Pilgrim and the Infintie Sadness.

Thrud being Thrud the Barbarian to American shores.

Viper debut their Vilains mini.

Lots of stuff this week. Enjoy your new comics!

Did you read the 25 cent Buckaroo Banzai preview?

... ummmm ....

Yeah. Big Buckaroo fan. Not touching the series with a 10 foot pole.

I haven't read every Concrete story -- most notably I haven't yet gotten my hands on a copy of the most recent one -- but I will say that Think Like a Mountain was one of my favorites. Do give it another shot!

Also, the new version will reprint one of my favorite Concrete shorts, "Stay Tuned for Pearl Hrabor".

Alas for those of us who bought the earlier version, it didn't include "Stay Tuned for Pearl Harbor" -- that was in a different collection which is now out of print. (Our local library has it, which is how I read it, but I'd love to own a copy...) Ah, the frustrations when a series you own part of is reprinted in a new order!
